Dozens killed in Baghdad fighting

US forces have been hit by a series of ambushes
Fighting between US forces and Shia insurgents across Baghdad's Sadr City suburb has left at least 34 dead.
Clashes in the last 24 hours also injured at least 170 Iraqis, health officials said. One US soldier is among the dead and several were wounded.

The area is a bastion of radical cleric Moqtada Sadr, who recently called on followers to observe a ceasefire.

Also in Baghdad, the city's governor narrowly escaped an assassination attempt targeting his convoy.

The attacks bring the number of Americans killed in Iraq in the last 24 hours to 11.

4. I've seen conflicting information on..
the number of casualties.

http://icasualties.org/oif/ is saying 997. It does look likely we'll be over 1000 by the end of today, if we aren't already.

The death toll slowed last week. I'm wishing no one ill will, just wondering about a political ploy.

11. This is simply a crime against all Americans and the world
This is where Kerry could take a lead role and shake the foundation of this campaign. Kerry should come out and say that due to the incompetence in the planning of the invasion (in particular too few troops) and the inept attempts to gain the peace he now believes we can never win the peace. He should come out and say we have lost all control and need to save our troops...our children. He should step up and say that after consulting with his advisors he now feels a full scale pull out is necessary to save the lives of our troops. This is Vietnam all over again and he will not stand by while more troops die for a lost cause.

This is the plain truth and for no one in our government to stand up and decide that the lives of our troops are more important than some fantasy vision of a "free and democratic" Iraq is a crime against our troops and every mother, father, sister and brother who have loved ones over there. We as Americans should not sit by while this is happening. We should be at the door of the white house demanding an end to the senseless loss of life and limb by our soldiers not to mention the untold casualties on innocent Iraqis.

This is no longer a campaign issue. It is a crime against humanity and we Americans are guilty by association. We are standing by while our children are being used in a strange game of Risk perpetrated by the war monger PNAC, Haliburton and an incompetent president.

Let the march to the white house begin. Stop all election nonsense and demand an end to the loss of American lives.

33 die in Baghdad clashes

Agencies
Tuesday September 7, 2004

At least 33 people were killed overnight as US troops engaged in a fierce battle with militants in the Sadr City area of Baghdad. In a separate attack, gunmen attempted to assassinate the city's governor.

In the Sadr City area of the Iraqi capital, the US military reported fighting between troops and militants loyal to the radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

The health ministry said 33 people had been killed and 193 injured in the fighting. Brian O'Malley, a US army captain, said several American soldiers had been injured.

Capt O'Malley said the fighting had erupted when militants attacked US forces carrying out routine patrols in the area. "We just kept coming under fire," he said.

19. important related article: 34 dead as U.S. battles al-Sadr loyalists
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1094552431745_95/?hub=TopStories

excerpt:

Al-Sadr aides say peace talks between their side and that of the Iraqi interim government had stalled. Current Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi is reportedly refusing to keep U.S. troops out of Sadr City -- a slum on the outskirts of Baghdad and a longtime stronghold of al-Sadr loyalists.

American officials say they never took part in the talks. Iraqi government officials are now saying they are not involved in negotiations with al-Sadr's militia.

The conflict came after a deadly three-week standoff at a holy shrine in Najaf. Al-Sadr ended it, ordering his followers to stop fighting. Al- Sadr called a cease-fire after he announced he was planning to enter politics himself.

well, if the negotiations did not apply to US military - what the hell do they think is going to happen?

More evidence that Allawi has no power to "rein in" the US forces in Iraq.

23. US warplanes pound Iraq's holy city
http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,10681861%5E401,00.html

Excuse me. Is this Deja Vu, mislabeled dateline,
or is Najaf back to August Siege?

And notice in the USMedia film, being shown on
CNN and CNBC,
of the destroyed tank being
retrieved in Sadr City, the great care in not showing
the damage to that Abrams tank.

The military has a term for this: FUBAR. It stands for Fucked
Up Beyond All Repair. At the Pentagon, the pros call the
Bush White House “FUBAR Central.”
They don’t laugh when they say it.
