'Kerry win could boost UK stocks' Sep 4 2004
Investors should be hoping John Kerry wins the United States presidential election as historically the UK stock market performs better following a Democrat victory, figures showed.
The FTSE 100 has risen by an average of 5% between October and December in the years since 1984 when a US presidential election has been won by a Democrat, according to Halifax Financial Services.
But the market has remained static during the same period if Americans voted a Republican into power.
The FTSE has also performed better in the run-up to elections which have been won by Democrats, rising by an average of 10% between when candidates are nominated in June and when people go to the polls in November, compared with gains averaging just 2% for elections won by Republicans.
