Bush made deal with Musharraf not to catch Bin-Laden
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/html/uncomp/articleshow?msid=144096

LONDON: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has struck a deal with the US not to capture Osama Bin Laden, fearing this could lead to unrest in Pakistan, according to a special investigation by The Guardian.

The paper reported Saturday that Bin Laden was being protected by three elaborate security rings manned by tribesmen stretching 192 kms in diameter in northern Pakistan.

The paper's information is based on comments made by Mansoor Ijaz, an American of Pakistan origin who, the paper said, knows al-Qaeda better than most people and had close contacts in Pakistan's intelligence agencies...

5. Ijaz is CIA most likely.
This Guy Reeks to high heaven...

Mansoor Ijaz is a FOX News Channel foreign affairs and terrorism analyst. He joined FOX in December 2001 and contributes to FNC’s prime time and weekend news analysis programs on matters related to terrorism, foreign policy and national security.

Ijaz is founder and chairman of The Crescent Partnerships, a series of New York-based private equity partnerships focused exclusively on the development of national security technologies. The firm’s partners include retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James Abrahamson, former director of President Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative and Turkey’s Global Group. Former CIA Director James Woolsey serves as vice chairman of Crescent’s Board of Governors.

<<<<<He is barking at Clinton still, which is absurd....>>>>

The Clinton Intel Record
by Mansoor Ijaz
National Review Online
April 28, 2003

The unearthing of documents directly linking Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda organization to Saddam Hussein this weekend may have hermetically sealed the Bush administration's case that dismantling Iraq's Baathist enterprise was in part necessary to undo terrorism's dynamic duo. But closing that case may reopen a Pandora's box for ex-Clinton administration officials who still believe their policy prescriptions protected U.S. national interests against the growing threat of terrorism during the past decade.

The London Telegraph's weekend revelations raise deeply disturbing questions about the extent and magnitude to which President Clinton, his national-security adviser Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger, and senior terrorism and State Department officials — including Assistant Secretary of State for East Africa, Susan Rice — politicized intelligence data, relied on and even circulated fabricated evidence in making critical national-security decisions, and presided over a string of intelligence failures during the months leading up to the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

A 'good' American citizen: Citizenship vs. civil liberties
by Mansoor Ijaz
Christian Science Monitor
April 1, 2003
In the days leading up to the start of "Operation Iraqi Freedom," a Muslim American civil rights lobbying group, the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) sent out a nine-page "Muslim Community Safety Kit" enunciating a series of largely ineffective steps for Arabs and Muslims living in the US to take if war backlash were to materialize against them. It wasn't the first time such knee-jerk civil rights lobbying had been done by a group purporting to represent America's Arabs and Muslims. But it should be the last.

The CAIR memo highlights the raging debate in US Arab and Muslim communities about whether protection of civil liberties should take precedence over the responsibilities of citizenship.

The continuing anger shown by immigrant Arabs and Muslims, whether about racial profiling at airports, or about charities being shut down for sending money to terrorist groups, or the failure to stop what many believe is an unjust war against Iraq, is misplaced and irresponsible.

It demonstrates an inability to put US national security interests ahead of doubtful claims that our civil rights are being violated, or to put loyalty to the state before religious and ethnic allegiances. The growing frustration also defines a critical leadership problem in our communities, that if not resolved soon, could doom another generation to the prejudices and venal hatred many of our parents brought when they made difficult choices to migrate to the US.

<<<<<What does this tell you?>>>>>

Ijaz's father, Dr. Mujaddid Ahmed Ijaz (deceased), a prominent American physicist, was an early pioneer in developing the intellectual infrastructure of Pakistan's nuclear program.

Much of Ijaz's time away from Crescent's daily affairs is spent in designing, funding and implementing projects for people in third-world countries. He has built rural elementary schools dedicated to countering the damaging influences of religious radicalism in his parent's native Pakistan. He has supported the construction and operation of democracy schools in Eastern Europe. And he is presently forming a charitable fund to support women acting as heads of families who have been widowed by the ongoing conflict in Kashmir.

for his radical McKinnley agenda, I think it is plausable. I think some consciescious rich person should hire some bounty hunters to go after Osama. Preferably some Pashtuns. There is no way a non Afghan American can catch bin Laden.

Edited on Sat Aug-23-03 09:34 AM by teryang
...the "Pakistani" airforce C 130 airlift in which "5000" surrounded Al Qaeda terrorists were given safe passage from Afghanistan. This was a major logistics effort. It was pretty obvious that something very shady was going on and that Rumsfeld was lying through his teeth when he said he didn't know about it. The US airforce had complete control of the Central Asian airspace at that time. Seymour Hersh wrote an article about this disgraceful deal with the devil at the time. The Pakistani government didn't save bin Laden. The neo con junta did. IMHO.

8. According to a story buried long ago...
...from a US Spec Ops soldier, his group had Osama & several others (Al Qaeda / Taliban mix) trapped in a cave or a hut (I don't recall the specifics) when the soldiers were told to "hold short" by rear-area commanders. While holding short, unmarked Russian-built helicopters came in, picked up Osama and his men and whisked them away.

The story was told to a local newspaper (somewhere in North Carolina, I believe) by the soldier upon his return to the US. Does anyone else have a link to the story or have it saved?

18. I don't have a link
But a friend of mine from NC, knows one of the Special Ops soldiers who was there and told me the same exact story, before the Hirsch story came out. The SO guy was really po'd because they had Osama cornered and were ready to go in for the capture, when they were ordered to stand down. He said he saw the helicopters come in and take Osama and many others out.

15. "I have no knowledge of that"
I remember his exact words at the Pentagon press conference when it came up the first time.

There was no follow up from the amnesia press. Oh, you don't know about the escape of virtually all of the remaining Al qaeda from Afghanistan and the virtual failure of our military mission there; Okey dokey, Mr. Secretary, that's fine with the American press. You let the alleged ringleaders of the 911 attack on the United States of America ESCAPE, we won't ask anymore questions about this because you said you have no knowledge of it.

Remember the press conference/debate, where Bush was questioned "Who's the president of Pakistan, Governor?" "Uh.. We just call him 'the president'"... Some lightness made of it in reports after, though it demonstrated unlikely familiarity at least. Later, was M not in NYC morning of the attack?

6. There is something holy/unholy about the leaders
You can't kill their leaders...it seems to be a law of living there...
only leaders can give the orders about killing other leaders...
the leaders did not give the OK to kill Hussein 12 years ago...
the leaders must have given OK to kill Hussein this time...
but maybe not...maybe just his sons...but maybe not...

In any case, our not-so-secret government onto itself (not for the people) makes the deals and we don't have a thing to say about it.

Do you have to ask whose agenda they're pursueing?

We are lambs...quiet, submissive lambs...who have relinquished what we told was our country.

The Bush CABAL reigns - so if Bush is defeated in '04 - is the CABAL defeated?

We need a world for the people not for the CABAL and there sometimes partners - here today, gone tomorrow partners.

25. as someone who wasn't following all this when it was happening
I remembering thinking a big "HUH?" when we didn't actually invade Afghanistan, when we didn't actually send troops into northern Pakistan to look under every rock, and when we seemed to pull back from the whole Tora Bora thing and when the administration seemed to be more interested in not offending Muzaref (or whatever his name is) than actually capture Bin laden.

The whole thing smelled fishy to high heaven then, and back then I was actually giving the admin the benefit of the doubt (I had my awakening a little later, when I saw Cheney give a speech and realized they were gonna go to war in Iraq no matter what anybody thought).

I remember arguing with my Dad about it (who is a total right-winger ex-military guy) about "why are we about to spend billions invading Iraq when we never actually did the job properly in Afghanistan and Pakistan? Why didn't we invade northern Pakistan? WE KNOW THAT'S WHERE THOSE GUYS ARE

Yes, i have since learned that this administration is the most corrupt criminal organization to probably ever have anything CLOSE to this much power. Ever. In the history of earth.

I just wish the truth would fucking get out there!

I just want to thank all the DUers who have been following this and know the details and the links. This is extremely important stuff and we can't let it just go away

27. Read this link!
If you want to know more about the US deliberately not catching bin Laden, read this link:

http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline/main/escapeafghanistan.html

Count the number of times they let him slip away. The most telling quote is this one: a US official later says that "casting our objectives too narrowly" risked "a premature collapse of the international effort (to overthrow the Taliban) if by some lucky chance Mr. bin Laden was captured." (Mirror, 7/8/02)

On another note, Mansour Ijaz is an extremely scary figure. He is clearly the minion for James Woolsey, and in fact the Guardian article mentions their connection in passing. Woolsey in turn is one of the most diehard of the neo-cons, closely linked to Richard Perle, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, and the rest of the gang. Woolsey recently told CNN that we're in the middle of WW4, and that the US would be attacking between 5 to 6 Middle Eastern countries in the next few years, something he thoroughly approves of.

Personally, I believe Ijaz had a direct role in the kidnapping and death of reporter Daniel Pearl. Someone pointed out to me a South Asian discussion board where one of the last people to see Daniel Pearl alive (Khalid Khawaja) was being grilled by people accusing him of being CIA. This guy (weakly) denied it, but admitted financial and personal ties to Ijaz and Woolsey. He was responsible for arranging the meet ups that lead to Pearl's kidnapping. You can see more how Pearl got roped into covering the stories that lead to his death thanks to Ijaz, here:

http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline/2002/vanityfair0802.html

There are tons of other things I could tell you that suggest Ijaz is an extremely bad man. He's involved in all kinds of intrigues. Here's another where he was trying to tie 9/11 to Iraq (note again the Woolsey link):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/857879/posts

Indians interested in watching Pakistan have devoted entire webpages to him. For instance, here's one:

http://www.pakistan-facts.com/staticpages/index.php/20021121114844805

He's involved in so many intrigutes that a popular Indian forum even has an entire forum section devoted just to talking about Ijaz! Do not trust anything he says, and keep a close eye on what he does!

On the other hand, this story of Pakistan protecting bin Laden definitely rings true to me, so I'm a bit confused what the agenda is on this one.

28. Obviously bin Laden is
the best tool that this administration has. If they were to have caught him right off they would lose their permanent excuse to trounce through the Middle East and fight simultaneous theater wars. I'd like to know at what point do they think he becomes expendable? Right before the '04 elections? I also want to know how much of an excuse Hussein will become for continued aggression as well. Will we invade Iran or Syria because the PNAC boys say they helped Saddam and his WMDs escape? All that is ludicrous to the informed, but the vilification of Saddam over the years, coupled with the fear derived from 9-11 makes powerful rhetoric to the ignorant masses. Just look how they have milked bin Laden to the hilt. But, yeah, this Ijaz thing becomes even more perplexing when you look at his whole body of work.

38. That's a good point, but I'd think of it this way
I would defy anyone to provide a definition of 'credible' that judged the New York Times as 'credible', while judging the Times of India as 'not credible'.

There's not really much difference between the credibility of the NYT and the Times of India. Perception of each probably varies quite a bit based on where you live on the planet.
