GOP-led team finds new target in California recall election

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Republican-led team that pushed Democratic Gov. Gray Davis' recall election onto the Oct. 7 ballot is zeroing in on a new target — Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante.
Rescue California, financed largely by $1.73 million from Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has started to focus on Bustamante, a foe of the recall and the ranking Democrat among 135 candidates to replace Davis if the recall succeeds.

Issa will contribute heavily to the new effort, although he and his aides did not give specifics. Issa donated $35,000 to the campaign Tuesday.
