LAT: Pair Were Ready for Prime Time (Mary Cheney and partner)
THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION
Pair Were Ready for Prime Time
The vice president's lesbian daughter and her life partner appear prominently at a gathering that has rejected them.

By Maura Reynolds, Times Staff Writer

NEW YORK — As Vice President Dick Cheney stepped onto the podium in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, the eyes of some were trained not on the stage but the audience, searching for a glimpse of his daughter Mary.

And there she was, in the family's box, sitting next to her partner in their first prominent public appearance as a lesbian couple.

The vice president, in his speech accepting renomination, did not mention Mary or her older sister, Elizabeth, choosing instead to feature his four grandchildren. At the end of the vice president's remarks, he was joined onstage by Elizabeth and the grandchildren, while Mary and Heather Poe applauded from their seats.

Their prominence in the first row of the box amounted to a silent resistance against religious conservatives, who had made Mary Cheney's sexual orientation an issue....

1. They tried to hide them in the front row
assuming that people would just think they were 'family friends' or something like that. The hypocrisy of having the one daughter on stage and not the other is staggering.

3. Hidden in plain sight?
That was surely bizarre. These Republicans surely have no grasp, do they?

She looks like a human being. Surprise!

Mary Cheney, right, and her partner, Heather Poe, made their first prominent public appearance together at the Republican convention.

9. They don't look too happy
What inner conflict and turmoil one must feel to have your own father reject you like that.

5. I feel so sorry for Mary Cheney
It must have been a slap in the face to have her father bring her sister and her sister's children on stage while he tried to hide her. And still, she supports her father's ticket - which doesn't even want her to have basic human rights.

If I were her I would have either distanced myself from my father or slit my wrists long ago. How she goes to sleep at night without an overdose of pills knowing her father is embarrassed by her and can't even bring himself to acknowledge her I will never know.

Mary is the saddest case of a self-loathing, self-hating B*sh supporter I have ever seen. Poor girl.

6. Interestingly, the article says Mary is Cheney's "aide," "confidante" --
I was unaware of that --

"Mary Cheney, 35, is her father's top campaign aide and close confidante. Her sexual orientation was forced back into the news last week when her father was asked about same-sex marriage.

"Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it's an issue that our family is very familiar with," Cheney replied. "My general view is that freedom means freedom for everyone. People … ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to."

Cheney went on to stake out a different position from President Bush, who proposed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. The vice president said he thought the issue should be left to the states to decide."

7. Cheney lacks any sign of human empathy...
...or morality, but, he does seem fairly devoid of religiousity. I guess you have to be to be as much of a friggin prick as he is AND maintain complete freedom from guilt while being a prick.

an agenda of hate. She is a willing accomplice. If she does not want to speak out against her pop's agenda, fine that's her business. But by showing up, she supports Hatred. Inc.

8. Religious crazies in my in-law family treat....
their lesbian daughter the same way. It's a subject they don't talk about even when it's sitting in the middle of the room. The lesbian daughter (VP in a large Corp) has adopted 2 kids with her partner (lawyer). They lesbian couple are wonderful parents. The family only credit the children to belonging to one woman and the other is just a friend. The other one is the lesbian. When the religious grand parents had a baby shower to welcome the adopted babies, it was in secret. They didn't want their church people to know or were invited to the party. The lesbian daughter, like Mary, doesn't tell them to go fok off.
