Voter speak
Theresa Lepore gets a hug from friends after losing her re-election bid for Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections to Arthur Anderson.
By Mike Clary
Staff Writer
Posted September 2 2004

Following Florida's 2000 presidential election debacle, Palm Beach County elections supervisor Theresa LePore became an easy target for disgruntled Democrats and late-night comics alike.

Ridiculed as Madame Butterfly Ballot, she also was sued, battered with hate mail and death threats, and blamed by some for everything from the war in Iraq to the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Recently, she drew fire for insisting that a paper trail wasn't needed to back up Palm Beach County's new touch-screen voting machines.

Still, LePore weathered a four-year tidal wave of criticism and scrutiny by clinging to a wryly mordant sense of humor and an allegiance to an office where she found work as a file clerk 33 years ago.

I can't believe how obvious it is that the reThugs are trying to steal elections. And not only in Florida, Ahhnold in CA is trying it, too.

14. <snip> Political background:
Elected supervisor in 1996 as a Democrat, defeating one Republican. Reelected as a Democrat in 2000 without opposition. Switched registration to No Party Affiliation in 2001; the office became nonpartisan in 2003.

Why blame LePore? Plenty of malicious actors helped rig the 2000 Florida election; I see no evidence that she was one of them. Her opposition to paper trails seems ignorance and naive rather than evil.

"Madame Butterfly" Theresa LePore wasn't always an embattled Palm Beach ballots chief. In the 1980s, she moonlighted as a flight attendant on private planes owned by Saudi weapons dealer Adnan Khashoggi, a middleman in Reagan administration arms sales to Iran.

Connoisseurs of Khashoggi-centric conspiracy theories should have little difficulty using this information to finger Khashoggi as the mastermind of the plot to deny Al Gore the presidency. Khashoggi has close ties, from Iran-Contra and elsewhere, to the Republicans, and vaguely defined ties to Dubya's father. (In a 1990 court case, Khashoggi's phone records revealed that Khashoggi had spoken at least twice with George Bush's vice-presidential office during 1985 and 1986.) LePore worked for Khashoggi during the 1980s, when, according to her official biography, she was chief deputy supervisor of elections in Palm Beach County, a job she held until 1996, when she was elected supervisor of elections. Ergo, LePore has been working as a Khashoggi asset to elect the son of Khashoggi's old comrade-in-arms, George Bush!

18. That was a fun article! I was unaware of the Khashoggi connection ...
... which would be worth remembering. But at the risk of underestimating LePore (".. a graduate of .. Palm Beach Junior College .. and attended Florida Atlantic University" http://www.pbcelections.org/Supervisor.htm ), I might suspect the alleged service as a flight attendant has a dull and unexciting interpretation: maybe she was sufficiently eager to please and appropriately incurious.

22. She is one of the main contributers
Gore lost thousands of votes because of they butterfly ballot.
And she never even apologized. And in this election, another mess.
Some absentee ballots were apparently scanned twice, which lead to them counting 6,000 extra votes that didn't exist. The design of absentee ballot was also confusing, and voters were supposed to connect arrows.
She is obviously as incompetent as they come.

19. LePore to be replaced by *Arthur Anderson*?!
In other words, Arthur Anderson is deemed, correctly, to be more trustworthy than LePore?

Oh, right, the Enron accountants were Arthur Andersen, with an 'e'. :-)

Bush Tried To Install Crony at Florida Election Board

www.Misleader.org >
===============================
BUSH TRIED TO INSTALL CRONY AT FLORIDA ELECTION BOARD

President Bush has said "Every registered voter deserves to have confidence
that the system is fair and elections are honest."<1> But according to a new
report, the President is doing all he can to once again rig the election in
Florida.

According to the Miami Daily Business Review, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R)
appointee at the Broward County Board of Elections hired a law firm headed
by two close cronies of President Bush to fight any charges against it
during the 2004 election. Specifically, the Broward Supervisor of Elections
Brenda Snipes hired the law firm Blosser & Sayfie.<2> Justin Sayfie "is a
former spokesman for Gov. Bush and currently is co-chair of the Bush/Cheney
re-election campaign in Broward County." He is also a Bush Ranger (aka.
someone who has raised more than $100,000 for the President's campaign).<3>
James Blosser is also "a top fund-raiser for President Bush's re-election
campaign."<4> Many observers expect the election will be extremely close in
Florida and predict it will touch off litigation. County election
supervisors and their legal teams could play a key role in deciding the
election.

While Snipes has since been forced to fire the law firm,<5> it shows just
how far the Bushes are willing to go to throw the Florida election again.
Earlier this summer, Jeb Bush attempted to purge thousands of voters from
the Florida voting rolls, but was stopped after public pressure overwhelmed
the effort.<6> Additionally, Florida GOP operatives are going to
naturalization offices to give new immigrants voter registration forms which
are already pre-marked to register the voter as a Republican.<7>
