Labor Secretary Defends Job Outsourcing
NEW YORK - Foreign companies have created millions of jobs in the United States, far outpacing the amount of work that American businesses have shifted abroad, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao said Wednesday.

While the movement of U.S. jobs to other countries has caused great public concern, Chao said, "I'm trying to get out the facts" without sounding "callous."

In the past year, employers have eliminated about 300,000 jobs in the United States in favor of cheaper labor elsewhere, Chao said. Yet about 9 million Americans currently work for U.S. subsidiaries of foreign-owned companies, she said.

"People talk about (outsourcing) a lot," Chao said in an interview after appearing before Missouri delegates at the Republican convention. "The anxiety belies the numbers."

Vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) seized on Chao's remarks and called it another example of President Bush's misguided economic policies.

1. What is the hell is she talking about? Has she lost her mind, or does she
think everyone else has lost theirs? What a amazingly stupid remark to make.

7. the old "insourcing" tripe; trust the corporatists as far as you can throw
'em
More crackheadedness; they're already saying outsourcing is the best thing since sliced bread, and now the neocolonialists are dragging alleged "insourcing" into this.

13. Saw a show clip
last night - can't remember where-that the outsourcing CEO's are reaping huge salaries and bonuses as a direct result of the outsourcing. They have jumped up to 3300 times the income of the Indians and others who have captured the jobs.

Can anyone give a citation?

11. There is a BIG difference

between people working here in the US for a multinational,
producing products and services to be consumed HERE IN THE
US versus taking jobs from people here in the US and giving
them to people overseas to produce products and services to
be consumed HERE IN THE US.

18. For example?
Let's see...like Hoffman-La Roche who have moved their IT management to Spain and Mexico

Like Sony who has moved much application development to Russia and wherever

Like just about every friggin corporation I can name, foreign or domestic, who offshore major IT work and do much less in the US...

Or how about all the disk drives and computer systems that are no longer manufactured in the US?

And so on and so on and so on...

Sure millions of crappy jobs have been created for people to sell stuff made in other countries to their fellow citizens who have jobs selling other crappy stuff made in other friggin countries...

It's a house of cards folks. Don't get caught standing underneath when it all collapses.
