Running battles on Athens streets
POLICE used tear gas today to disperse hundreds of demonstrators who lit fires, smashed windows and beat up journalists as they marched through Athens to protest a visit by US Secretary of State Colin Powell.

One report this morning said 2000 people were involved in the protest, but another put the figure at 700.

The demonstrators, who scuffled with police in front of the Parliament, fought running battles with riot squads trying to prevent them from reaching the US Embassy.

They shouted slogans against the US-led occupation of Iraq.

Banners read "Powell Out" and "US out of Iraq".

1. My goodness...
Even Powell isn't shown any respect...

I hope this is all over CNN... I want the Americans still slumbering through this nightmare to get a wake up call.

Bush has brought this country to its lowest point in my lifetime.

:(

2. Well, it is...
CNN International that is. The networks last hold on some form of respect among their viewers. But even in this arena they are order of magnitudes behind BBC. Go figure...

4. I heard it on the CBC World at 6 on the SW radio...you could hear
the rioters in the background. An organizer said it was planned to be a peaceful demonstration and you know the rest. "Anti-American protests at the Olympics"....nice work, George.
