WASHINGTON (AP) - Pentagon computer systems cannot track all military members, one of the flaws that hampered the activation of about 300,000 reservists since the Sept. 11 attacks, congressional investigators said in a report Thursday.
The military services had separate and sometimes incompatible computer systems to keep track of active-duty and reserve personnel, forcing some officials to use desktop computer spreadsheets for that purpose, the General Accounting Office report said.
Inconsistent orders on how to activate units caused problems such as activating an Air National Guard unit without notifying Air National Guard leaders, the investigators found.
The Pentagon lost track of some reservists called to active duty, keeping them on active duty longer than authorized or keeping units on alert for activation for a year or more.<snip>
