GOP Delegates Meet With Anti- Bush Signs
By SARA KUGLER, Associated Press Writer

.. Bright blue tarps, painted with glaring yellow letters, are going up on dozens of rooftops in Brooklyn, under the flight paths into busy New York airports. Thousands of delegates and convention guests peering down at the city might see messages like "No more years" and "Re- defeat Bush."

"We just hope that they'll look down and ask themselves, 'Why, why do they feel so strongly? Why is it that New York feels this way?'" said Genevieve Christy, who has painted more than 80 banners since thinking of the idea a few weeks ago. ..

Five blocks from convention headquarters at Madison Square Garden, where President Bush is to be nominated Sept. 2, a 25-by-75-foot banner screams "Save America. Defeat Bush."

The sign hangs from the offices of the Unite Here union, which represents 440,000 workers from various industries, including hospitality, gaming and textiles.

It's not just the views from above that are being used. For months, protest groups have been slapping stickers and posters on subway platforms, train cars, traffic signs, park benches, light poles and anywhere else they can find space. ..

1. Welcome to New York
There is no law that requires people to be polite.

3. In fact,
I think local law prohibits it :)

Just kidding... I grew up on Long Island and I ADORE NYC. This story makes me love it even more.

2. Go NEW YORK Go!!!!!
They deserve this for exploiting 9/11 and also for not warning the public and the brave workers of the dangerous things they were all inhaling at ground zero.

4. I realize it's because of the whole 9/11 thing...
But Shrubya having his convention in NYC would be like Kerry having his in Austin...

Once again, our leader, alas, has no brain...

18. No, I Believe the Original Would Be
Lee Atwater, who repented his slimeball tactics on his deathbed.
During that election, Atwater was assigned a "minder" by the Bush campaign, George W. Bush. The younger Bush's political strategist, Karl Rove, would later employ Atwater's tactics against John McCain in the 2000 Republican primary.

Atwater's opponents characterized him as "the Darth Vader of the Republican party", "the happy hatchet man", and "the guy who went negative for the sheer joy of it."

In 1991, Atwater was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Shortly before his death he said he had converted to Catholicism and apologized to Dukakis for remarks which he had made during the 1988 campaign

9. It might have been a good idea
If he
* hadn't jumped the shark on the war on terror (or more specifically 9/11),
* actually provided the money promised to NY in September 2001, and
* had not screwed the first responders nationwide

This decison was made when he had 80-90 approval ratings.

19. IMO Austin is a liberal oasis in a puke desert
And Texas has many very cool folks. Texas also has a relatively large black and Hispanic population (Dem/liberal) that will become a majority in a few years.

Maybe it would be more like Kerry having the Dem convention in Houston.

I'm not criticizing your post - as much as pointing out something that a lot of folks here don't understand - due to that old comforting need to stereotype.

:hi:

11. They will also be seeing lots of these:

We hope you'll agree, the simple is a uniquely powerful visual gesture. Now imagine this bold and unmistakable symbol hanging all over NYC during the Republican National Convention, August 29th - September 2nd.

Taking part in this silent protest is one of the easiest ways for New Yorkers to participate in the growing counter convention movement. Even if you'll be out of town during the actual convention dates, the window treatment project is a great way to make your voice heard.

Send a direct message to GWB and the Republican Party by displaying the symbol during the RNC.

In order to make the most impact, display your sign in every window in your home, car, office, etc. on or before August 23rd. If you don't have access to a printer or would prefer to create your own sign, please feel encouraged to do so. The reason we chose this symbol is because it's so easy to reproduce. In addition to printing out the .jpgs available on this site, you can create your own on poster board or canvas or a sheet using paint, chalk, markers, etc. Be creative! Be bold!

Let no Republican look anywhere in this city without seeing our message. The more city windows we can fill, the more impressive our visual spectacle will be.

Remember, each person helps the message grow. Each window expands the canvas. It's simple. You can't get in trouble. You don't even have to be here during the convention to protest it.

Let's make the entire city our canvas and let the RNC know that they've grossly miscalculated their choice of venue.

This is New York City, RNC, take your party elsewhere!!!!!!!!

And if you don't live in New York, do it anyway. We can create this visual message all over the country until the election on November 2.

15. Will we get to see any of this on TV news, or just read it on back pages?
Wonder if TV camera coverage will show this the way they frequently showed the anti-Dem business signs at Boston, or instead will they fail to show the overt expressions of anti-Bush sentiment like they failed to ever show the anti-Bush Inaugural demonstrations?

16. If they manage to convince
Muricans that NYC is a repuke lovefest, the media whores will have pulled off a magic act worthy of Houdini. I think that as in 68 though the protests will probably be THE STORY of the convention, spun to make it appear that the "silent majority" supports the chimp and the protestors are just a bunch of whackos. They won't report actual numbers or actual grievences - rather find a few people sure to offend folks in the heartland and focus on them.

17. Polite often = Lying
Why should this tolerant, progressive, diverse city have to host (and PAY FOR) the intolerant, prejudiced and racist, Constitution-hating party for bigots who have weakened the Constitution and this great nation??

This is one of the more outrageously insensitive and ill-conceived things Bush has done and it will be viewed as such.

24. In addition to Brooklyn, there are Manhattan rooftoops that
have been tagged with silver paint--

so the delegates can gaze from their hotel rooms and get the message.....
