New genetic link found to crib deaths
A collection of genes involved in early development may help explain why black babies are more at risk of sudden infant death syndrome than other U.S. groups, researchers said Thursday.

The gene mutations may also help explain why thousands of U.S. infants still succumb each year to SIDS, also known as crib death or cot death, despite education campaigns that have cut the rate in half, the researchers said.

Dr. Debra Weese-Mayer, a professor of pediatrics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, said the finding does not fully explain the unexpected deaths of 3,000 U.S. infants a year, but helps explain some of the underlying biology.

"For years everyone said SIDS was a mystery, but to me it is a puzzle and each of our studies fits in another piece," Weese-Mayer said in a telephone interview.

1. Just wanted to make sure you knew about the Lancaster, PA
connection to genetic discoveries regarding SIDS ... work done at the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, Lancaster County, PA -- a clinic that treats metabolic disorders common in Amish and Old Order Mennonite children.

"This study provides new insight into how the nervous system is regulated and highlights the benefits of close collaborations between researchers, physicians, and the patients they care for," said Dr. Erik G. Puffenberger, Laboratory Director at the Clinic for Special Children, the paper's first author."

2. A genetic link?

Gee, I wonder how the anti-immunization crowd will spin these results. After all, SIDS is supposed to be due to all the shots we give infants, you know. :eyes:

3. How about the "it's murder" crowd?
There are some people who scream murder whenever a SIDS death happens.

6. Compromise!
50% murder, 50% vaccinations.

;-)

7. Hmm....SIDS and vaccines

"Gee, I wonder how the anti-immunization crowd will spin these results."

Can't you work it out? It's the most basic pseudoscience, a child could write it! I'll demonstrate...

The vaccines adversely effect the complimentation of the protein transport pathways in the upper GI tract allowing opioid peptides to leak across the bowel wall and into the blood where they interfere with neurodevelopment. The interuption of neurodevelopment in the baby can lead to regressive autistic syndrome, but in severe cases may manifest itself as SIDS. A genetic component to the susceptibilty to SIDS has been discovered, and it was found that possession of this trait caused a weakening in the protein transport pathway and therefore increased the risk that one of the paedocidal conventional vaccines would disrupt the protein transport pathway.

Fortunately for us, Dr Herschel von Frugelmeigher of the Australian Institute of Chakra Science has developed a vaccine effective against all childhood diseases that contains none of the harmful antigens found in conventional or "allopathic" vaccines. Through a comprehensive series of testimonials Dr von Frugelheigher has demonstrated that the vaccines are 100% safe, and provoke no immune response in children as young as 2 days (this is good because it is the immune response that is dangerous to the children). The new HvF vaccine is given only after the child has been screened by a fully licenced, American Psychic College registered psychic for past life allergies and potential reactions, thereby ensuring that none of those harmful immune reactions will occur.

5. Breastfed babies are shown to have lower
rates of SIDS. It is believed that a component of the milk helps develop the autonomic nervous system better.

There is some other information from James McKenna that discusses lower SIDS rates in other countries and the fact that those babies sleep in close proximity to their mothers, if not with them. The frequent contact may help reduce physical stress on the infant.

8. So if it's genetic, how does education help
reduce deaths?

Sounds fishy to me.

9. Hmm..
""So if it's genetic, how does education help""

The genetic component may not be directly causitive, but merely predispose the child to SIDS.

This may be seen in that despite educating the parents on ways in which to reduce the risk of SIDS, it has not entirely eliminated SIDS.
