U.S. Must Do More to Reach Out to Muslims-Bush Aide (Rice)

WASHINGTON (Reuters)

President Bush's top security aide said on Thursday the United States had not done enough to reach out to the world's more than 1 billion Muslims, many of whom are critical of the Iraq war and see a pro-Israeli bias in U.S. Middle East policy.

White House national security adviser Condoleezza Rice said the Bush administration wanted to encourage "voices of moderation and tolerance and pluralism" in the Muslim world, and dispel an image that the United States is a "crass" culture.

It has pursued such goals in the past, but with little success, and Rice acknowledged widespread skepticism toward America among Muslims. ..

Pollster John Zogby said preliminary results of a survey of Muslim American voters in the United States showed overwhelming opposition to Bush. That is a dramatic shift from 2000, when Republicans actively courted the Muslim vote and Bush received solid support.

Zogby attributed the shift in sentiment to the war in Iraq, U.S. Middle East policy and post-Sept. 11, 2001 legislation such as the USA Patriot ACT, which many Muslims feel discriminates against them. ..
