Media to Be Restricted at Terror Hearings (dress code)
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 08:14 PM by party_line
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Media covering preliminary hearings for terror suspects next week at Guantanamo Bay will face tight restrictions, including rules that may delay or prevent the release of information the U.S. military says is classified or protected.
...
No audio, video, photographs or other electronic images will be allowed of proceedings or participants without approval of military public affairs officers. Tape recorders, telephones and computers will be barred from the courtroom while the proceedings are in session.

The identities of all commission personnel, prosecutors, defense counsels, and witnesses, cannot be released without prior approval.

The rules even advise what not to wear to the hearings: "Inappropriate attire would include, but is not limited to, sleeveless shirts, denim jeans, T-shirts, mini skirts, any accessories or other clothing attire with political slogan, sneakers or tennis shoes and sandals."

1. T-Shirts are inappropriate attire?
Funny, I always figure when I see someone in a coat and tie, they're a criminal trying to get my money. All the big criminals wear coats and ties, presumably as gang attire.

2. Can you even issue a dress code to a free press?
What's the point? There won't even be any cameras. It's just a hoop to jump through. And maybe to discourage turn-out? It's hot there now, isn't it?

4. Poloshirts and slacks aren't banned.

Come to think of it, I've never seen a news reporter wear a T-shirt or jeans. It should be a non-issue.
