The job cuts at the personal computer and consumer electronics company are part of a stream of layoffs announced earlier this year. The company would not specify how many positions were being eliminated in the latest wave of cuts, though Gateway spokesman Bob Sherbin said it was above 100 and significantly below 500.
"It is part of our ongoing effort to get the company back to sustain profitability," Sherbin said by phone Sunday from the San Diego suburb of Poway, where Gateway is based.
Employees were told of the job eliminations late last week.
The company plans to trim its number of employees to around 2,000 by year's end, down from 7,400 at the end of last year and 24,600 at the end of 2000.
