Salem Chalabi Says Charges Undermine Saddam Trial
LONDON (Reuters) - Salem Chalabi, the administrator of the Iraqi war crimes tribunal trying Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), said on Monday murder charges against him were aimed at undermining the trial of the former dictator.
...
He said the judge who issued the arrest warrant had criticized the procedures established for trying Saddam.

"The fact that it was leaked means there was some element of a smear campaign against me, and therefore against the tribunal, trying to discredit the tribunal, which I think has happened now," he said. "That's what is troubling me. I want to go back and continue the work. There are a large number of staff still working, trying to do the investigations. But under these kind of allegations it makes it more difficult."

2. That trial was generating lots of interest
I don't doubt that the bushies are happy to see its format changed. Who knows what things Saddam may have revealed. At one point, they probably counted on Salem not to let anything slip but he's no longer dependable.

3. This way, no trial before the election
And therefore, no awkward information about Reagan/Bush I and their cozy relationship with Saddam before the election. Plus, it sends a signal to uppity puppets of all types - don't mess with the BFEE, there's plenty more where you came from.
