In 48 hours, Rep. Rodney Alexander went from Democrat to Republican, friend to foe – or foe to friend, depending on your political persuasion.

Democrats reacted to the news by calling the first-term congressman a turncoat and a coward. They must now gain another seat, 12 in all, to win back the House this fall. The count today: Democrats 205, Republicans 229.

A new ally, on the other hand, rang him up Friday to say congratulations. President Bush, according to White House spokesman Scott McClellan, welcomed Alexander to the GOP and wished him well.

Alexander's about-face came about in two days, but had really been in the works for two years.

1. Another Zell Miller?
some people have long memories and this won't go unnoticed.
In this short run this is very serious, but in a longer perspective maybe this turncoat is better being unmasked now instead of later.

I can't see him being much use to the GOP either - if charcacter is an indicator.
stay tuned.

4. If that's how they want to play the game, then we need to run...
...stealth Democrats on the Republican ticket.

5. I'd rather he just switch
And let the voters sort in out in November. We don't need anymore Zell Millers.

6. Any chance of a write-in candidacy?
Boy is this guy one duplicitous a**hole. My own feeling is that he wouldn't even make the run-off if the Democrats had a real candidate on the ballot. Most Democrats sure as hell aren't going to vote for him, and I suspect most Republicans won't either.

Seeing how Breaux is retiring from the senate, perhaps he can be convinced to run as a write-in candidate.

While I generally despite Phil Gramm, at least he went about things in a somewhat honorable fashion. When he changed parties, he resigned, and then ran for the seat (and won) in a special election.

8. This was sleazy. He waited until the last minute to switch ...

... so no Democrat had time to file to oppose him.

I guess he doesn't believe he could win a fair fight.

9. Good. We're clearing the brush.
Miller, Hall, Alexander. I always thought that Alexander and/or Hall would have made a deal with the GOP if their votes were needed for a majority. That basically makes them worthless, and takes up space in funding, leadership development, party control, etc.
