Blix more reliable than U.S. intelligence about Iraqi WMDs: Clinton

TORONTO - Former U.S. president Bill Clinton said Thursday he would have taken the word of UN weapons inspector Hans Blix over U.S. intelligence reports about evidence of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.

"Yeah, I would have. It's not a question of believing him over the intelligence agencies but the intelligence was ambiguous on the point really," Clinton said in an interview with CBC's The National.

Blix led the UN weapons inspections in the months leading up to the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

His teams found little to support the pre-war assertions by the United States that Saddam Hussein's regime was actively developing and stockpiling chemical, biological or nuclear weapons.

"I certainly would have believed it enough to put off and try to build more support," he said, referring to getting more support from the international community before invading Iraq.

"I mean, what was the hurry?" asked Clinton, who was in Toronto to sign copies of his memoir My Life.

This does help our image abroad though. It helps folks from outside our country know that 1 of our 2 major political parties are sane.

... and they repeatedly determined, with a short lag time, that in alleged US "info" was unreliable.

There's no reason to say "everybody was deluded." Review the old news accounts: UN inspectors were providing good information -- so Bush told 'em to git out.
