Drudge: VETS CHARGE: KERRY KILLED FLEEING TEEN; LIED FOR MEDAL
http://www.drudgereport.com/ufd1.htm

A veterans group seeking to deeply discredit Democrat John Kerry's military service will charge in the new bombshell book UNFIT FOR COMMAND:

"Kerry earned his Silver Star by killing a lone, fleeing, teenage Viet Cong in a loincloth."

"And if Kerry's superiors had known the truth at the time, they would never have recommended him for the medal."

The book also claims to detail how Kerry personally ordered the slaughter of small animals at a small hamlet along the Song Bo De River.

103. Snopes debunked this awhile back - looks like it's all * has though
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 03:16 PM by vidali
so they're running with it. Sad.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/service.asp

Kerry earned his Silver Star on 28 February 1969, when he beached his craft and jumped off it with an M-16 rifle in hand to chase and shoot a guerrilla who was running into position to launch a B-40 rocket at Kerry's boat. Contrary to the account quoted above, Kerry did not shoot a "Charlie" who had "fired at the boat and missed," whose "rocket launcher was empty," and who was "already dead or dying" after being "knocked down with a .50 caliber round." Kerry's boat had been hit by a rocket fired by someone else — the guerrilla in question was still armed with a live B-40 and had only been clipped in the leg; when the guerrilla got up to run, Kerry assumed he was getting into position to launch a rocket and shot him:

On Feb. 28, 1969, Kerry's boat received word that a swift boat was being ambushed. As Kerry raced to the scene, his boat became another target, as a Viet Cong B-40 rocket blast shattered a window. Kerry could have ordered his crew to hit the enemy and run. But the skipper had a more aggressive reaction in mind. Beach the boat, Kerry ordered, and the craft's bow was quickly rammed upon the shoreline. Out of the bush appeared a teenager in a loin cloth, clutching a grenade launcher.

An enemy was just feet away, holding a weapon with enough firepower to blow up the boat. Kerry's forward gunner, Belodeau, shot and clipped the Viet Cong in the leg. Then Belodeau's gun jammed, according to other crewmates (Belodeau died in 1997). Medeiros tried to fire at the Viet Cong, but he couldn't get a shot off.

...lots more.

I definately take whatever he reports with a grain of salt. I try to make my news sources as diverse as possible so that I can understand it from various perspectives and determine any inconsistencies.

Drudge is biased and he tends to lean to the right but this is a good thing because we can get the heads-up on the dirty tricks of the GOP.

that Drudge is a bunch of bullshit gossip. Not that there's not a place for it. But LBN certainly isn't.

If you go into GD, there's several SwiftVet threads.

I've asked the admins about this, and they are determined to allow this "news" to be posted in this forum.

I sure as hell hope they change their minds.

Commanders do NOT send bullshit to a four-star general/admiral. Believe me, this stuff is screened, screened again, and checked over with a fine-toothed comb before it reaches anyone's desk with stars on his collar because those people do NOT enjoy being embarassed like that.

The probability of anyone's BSM/SSM being awarded under bogus circumstances is virtually nil.

19. Shameful
The GOP is despicable. All of our vets should wake up and realize that that Bush will skewer them and remove their benefits if its politically expedient.

I hope the low depths to which the GOP has sunk is clear to ma and pa voter. I haven't really felt "hate" toward the GOP, until I read about this ad.

Low and slimy are two words that come to mind, but those words don't capture the disgust I feel for those who create ads like this.

To dishonor a person for his or her honorable military service is the trademark of the lowest of the low. I hope McCain is ashamed for hitching his wagon to this bunch.

We need our own ad with Max Cleland and the swift boat vets that actually served with Kerry. I'm praying that this latest stunt by the GOP backfires. I keep wondering when they are going to overplay their hand.

This group has now gone so far overboard that almost anybody can see that they live in la-la land. The outcome will be to totally discredit the group and simultaneously cause more people to ask what is going on when the * administration encourages this kind of nonsense.

That might even bring people around to asking some more questions about W's service record.

You don't carry a gun in your loin cloth, you carry it in your hands. Ask any soldier in Iraq if those shooting at them are wearing military uniforms.

And.. in Vietnam, a majority of soldiers were in their teens... if the enemy was chasing them down would they be "fleeing teens"?

These people are pigs. Absolute fucking pigs. We put a WAR HERO against an AWOL cocaine addict, and this is how they respond. Fuck them, may they burn in hell.

83. Joe Conason on John O'Neill
http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2004/04/23/o_neill/

(You'll have to watch an add first to get to the article, but it's worth it.)

To establish his nonpartisan credentials, O'Neill assured the CNN anchor that he was "never contacted" by the Bush-Cheney campaign. What he didn't mention, however, is that his law firm boasts long-standing and powerful connections with the Bush White House.

With an oil and litigation practice focused on the defense of major energy and industrial firms, the dozen partners in Clements, O'Neill, Pierce, Wilson & Fulkerson have clout that exceeds their firm's small size. Their corporate clients include Exxon Mobil, General Electric, Reliant Energy, Koch Industries and Eastman Kodak. More important, among the name partners is Margaret Wilson, the former general counsel to George W. Bush during his second term as Texas governor. (She succeeded Alberto Gonzales, who currently serves as White House counsel.)

96. Killing in war is always ugly
That is why it should always be the last resort. Bush made it his first resort, and thousands of unarmed teenagers and younger children in Iraq have died as a result, plus hundreds of teenage U.S. soldiers. That is the real issue of the election - all this other stuff is just distraction.

One hopes that having been involved in war and the unfortunate necessity of killing, Kerry would end this war quickly and take the U.S. back to making war the last choice of national policy, not the first choice.

101. This is not a new issue
the incident in question was outlined in this book: Tour of Duty : John Kerry and the Vietnam War, and came up duing his 1996 campaign. Looks like the attack dogs are 'drudging' it up again.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060565233/103-7867179-9924628

From a Boston Globe review of the book:

"He witnessed the inadvertent killings by fire power under his command of an innocent child in a sampan traveling in violation of a nightly curfew, and of an old papasan farmer who bolted when he should have froze. Kerry personally killed an enemy under circumstances that are not entirely clear, but probably sanctioned by war's ambiguous rules of engagement. The incident, finessed somewhat clumsily in Brinkley's account, surfaced during Kerry's re-election campaign for the Senate in 1996 when he was questioned about having shot a wounded guerrilla who had already fallen. Kerry rallied several high profile Vietnam veterans, including retired Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, Senators Max Cleland and Bob Kerrey, to defend his lightening decision to shoot an adversary who, while down, remained armed and potentially deadly."

106. Although I think Kerry makes too much of his Vietnam experience --
I mean how can I honor someone's service in a war that was immoral and illegal and killed so many people. But this charge is over the top. The repukes are such masters of the BIG LIE approach that they could teach the Nazis a thing or two about propaganda. Much is made about trying to fight an enemy who is not afraid of dying (so-called terrorists) -- but I think the Dems have got to start talking about how much the republicans have no ethical bottom; zero sense of decency. They are going to keep throwing such crap out till November -- they could care less if any of it is true. Rove knows that all he needs is enough of it to stick to Kerry that the voters are thoroughly confused and frightened. I think the Dems have got to take on their tactics head on. As Dean said: We cannot play nice -- we are in a Civil War to save our country!!!!

a loincloth?!? I know it's been said, but come on. They are even ethnocentric and superior when trying to paint a sympathetic picture. I'm pretty sure the Vietnamese stopped wearing loincloths, oh, a few thousand years ago.

But I guess the Repubs have no frame of reference. After all, they never went to Vietnam, so they didn't see them. Plus, they never learned it in school - that's what happens when you barely pull Cs in your college classes. I wonder why Bush got rejected from law school - maybe he asked a Nordic-looking interviewer about that Thor guy...

115. I agree we must not let this pass unresponded to
Although your message appears to fulfill Godwin's Law regarding the probability of usenet discussions eventually making comparisons to Nazi's or Hitler, and would therefore invalidate your argument, I think the comparison's got some vality.

Whether it's the invisible evil hand of Rove, or simply evidence of desperation amongst *'s partisans, both bet that any response merely gives the issue more legs in the media and opportunity for bluster and noise to obfuscate & distract & confuse the masses. However, responded to it must be.

The question is what's the right response? I'm not sure a threatening letter from the DNC legal team fits the bill. I fear that's stepping into a trap, some strategem casting the Dems as petty and prone to sue. Nevertheless, the deafening roar of "enough" from those of us who see through the lies may drown all else out.

114. It's possible these vets are mentally incompetent because of war?
Unfortunately, many veterans have been so brain-washed, and have been through so much during wartime, they return to become misfits to society; If that's the case, they should be pittied; but, if it's just Fascist tactics, as the Bush administration is promoting, they need to be stopped, not glorified by the news media.
How dare they try to dis-credit a real hero like John Kerry.
Having George W. Bush as president has to be one of the most depressing things I've ever witnessed in my lifetime. He's such an embarassment, and dumber than owl-crap.

120. So basically Kerry doesn't deserve anything and he never went to Vietnam
I just e-mailed McCain asking him and other Republican Leaders will speak out against these attacks. This is just as bad or worse than Wille Horton I believe. Now they are going for personal attacks against Kerry since everything else wasn't working. I will never serve in the military, I never liked the military, but I will never dispute a man's service even if I don't agree with him or her. This is exactly the reason why people in general don't like people in the military. They are usually ignorant, very agressive, and have no sense of reality. Some even say that My Lai never occured!?? Now these same "veterans" are accusing Kerry of doing the same thing that they denied doing during the war. Flip-flop anyone? As soon as I get my Ph.D. I am going to drive the media crazy because they aren't ready for me and I will expose everyone in the business. Let's e-mail McCain and other media outlets and demand that they discredit these accusations.

127. Veterans Speak Out on Kerry Ad
Some veterans who served with democratic candidate John Kerry on swift boats in Vietnam claim he lied to get his medals.
<snip>

"When I saw that, my blood pressure went up," Retired Sgt. 1st Class Albert Lewis said. "I told my wife, these guys, I bet you, if they were in Vietnam, they were in hotels back in Saigon, eating steak and eggs for breakfast."

Lewis fought for a year in the Vietnam war. He says the 60 second anti-Kerry ad is only political and veterans shouldn't speak out against one of their own.
