KIEV, Ukraine (AP) - Mounting a sarcastic protest against a West-leaning opposition candidate, nationalists collected signatures Tuesday in a symbolic drive to qualify the U.S. ambassador to run in Ukraine's presidential election.
According to opinion polls, opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko - a proponent of open markets and free trade - is the front-runner in the Oct. 31 election, where he will likely face Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.
The Ukrainian nationalist organization Bratstvo, or Brotherhood, has accused Yushchenko of getting money from the U.S. government to run his campaign. Yushchenko has denied the charge and accused his opponents of trying to portray him as a captive of Western interests in the former Soviet republic.
Bratstvo quoted its leader, Dmytro Korchynsky, as saying that U.S. Ambassador John Herbst should not "waste money for a middleman" like Yushchenko and should run for president himself.
