Texas delegates laud convention

By Valerie Conners

BOSTON - After four days of impassioned speeches, rallying caucuses and encounters with fellow Democrats from across the nation, Texas delegates Thursday hailed the Democratic National Convention as a rousing success in launching the party's nominees and platform.

"Last August, I first heard Kerry speak for about 10 minutes, and I knew that was my man," said Amarillo delegate Jim Alexander. "And the greatest part of the convention will happen tonight. My dream since last August was to hear Kerry live."

"This is going to be one of the most critical elections we've had in years," said Potter County Commissioner Iris Lawrence.
"It might be the election of the century."Lawrence defends her candidate against critics who say Kerry waffles on critical issues.

"I do believe John Kerry is a man of conviction and I believe in my heart what he says, he will do," said Lawrence. "They've labeled him a flip-flop, but all of us have to change to deal with changes that come around. That's not flip-flopping, that's stepping up to bat, and that's life."
