OTTAWA—In the final days of the election, Prime Minister Paul Martin tried to paint himself as a friend of the New Democrats in an 11th hour bid to reach out to left-wing voters.

Now, the NDP plans to put Martin's musings — and his election promises on social issues — to a "litmus test" as it looks for early action on health care, child care and cities.

"Is it the guy we've seen for the last 10 years, who was an incredibly conservative finance minister ... or is it the guy who showed up in the last 72 hours of the election campaign and did the usual Liberal trick of campaigning from the left and governing from the right," he said

On a pre-election stop to attend Earthwalk in Victoria, I was astounded (and flattered) to hear that he'd lingered over the NDP's literature table and taken a copy of my environmental issues summary away with him.
