Daschle concerned about 'sobering' terror briefing
Edited on Sat Jul-10-04 06:50 PM by hightime
SPEARFISH -- Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said Thursday that he was very concerned about homeland security issues in the face of what he called the most sobering terror report he had heard recently.
The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of intelligence indicating an attack aimed at disrupting elections, the White House said Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts underway to ''ramp up security,'' White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Thursday.
"It is absolutely essential for the U.S. Senate to turn its attention to what we can do to make America safe," Daschle said.
Of particular concern are the nation's borders and ports, Daschle said, and there are security issues unresolved as the homeland security appropriations are "hung up" in the Senate.

2. God, I wish someone would buy this man a CLUE
It's the administration that wants to disrupt elections -- if Al Qaeda is going along, well, so much the better.

And once again Daschle plays right into their hands. Way to go, Tom, you pathetic idiot.

suckered him into the WMD bullshit, and he continues to take their word for terror alerts? I hope his exposure in F911 makes his mark in history as the spineless pussy little gullible shit he is.
Oh my god!!!! I hate him!!!

8. This is actually smart
If you have been watching the senate recently you will see what is being set up.

The repubs are busy trying to write hate in to the constitution, as well as get some of their other pathetic agenda across. NONE of which has anything to do with security.

The dems in the senate are setting it up so that if something DOES happen we can turn around and say the repubs were too damn busy with marriage amendments instead of dealing with security.

Daschle is doing well on this one.

9. I agree Freya and welcome aboard!
Tom's demeanor may have been fine when the Senate was populated with honorable men of differing opinions....but he's the odd man out these days, I'm afraid. Cheney recently set the new standard by which future acts of tasteless behavior will be measured in the Senate.

But he's helping prioritize the Senate's business.....and that business is not gay bashing or flag waving.....it's protecting this country, first and foremost.

15. Such hatred and venom...

... for someone they don't even know. Have any of you Daschle haters read his book and gained an understanding of all the behind the scenes deals and work that Daschle has done, setting up procedural agreements long in advance (one of which sure bit Trent Lott in the keister when Jeffords defected)?

I am surprised that more members here can not read between the lines.

36. Daschle is no villain. His heart is in the right place.
My difficulty with him is the way he ran the shop while majority leader. I kept wondering when he would present an actual opposition. Where were the Enron/Cheney hearings? Where were the 9-11 hearings? Where was the overall vision that would spill over into a House majority? He's a good man but an anachronism in some ways. Newt Gingrich proved the time for subtlety ended in 1994.

17. Maybe my mom wasn't crazy when she told me Fri she heard
that they believe that there are at least 7 nuclear bombs in the US already. Don't know where or what kind. Expect them to be used simultaneously before the elections. That they got in through the weakened port security. I asked her where she heard it she said it was all over. Usually watches MSNBC or CNN or reluctantly FOX. She was very upset and depressed. Wants to pull out her savings and buy gold. Told me to go ahead and max out the charge cards. I couldn't find a word about it. I think it's another scare tactic.

How will the fancy new computer based touch-screen voting machines work after so many nuclear electromagnetic pulses? ;-)

On second thought: My bad, its probably only 7 "dirty" bombs. Enough to panic the place into a meltdown (with the media's help). :-(

.... Gee, THAT'LL make Bush and Homeland Security look GOOD wont it ???

I don't think it's a risk the BFEE can take, because all along Dean and other Dem candidates have been saying that we're no more safe here at home, and an attack in the contiguous states would prove us right.

who the interviewer was, I believe it was Friday afternoon . He said it is known that there are 20 suitcase nukes in the US and they plan to hit 8 or 9 simultaneously. Real scary stuff, like you would hear on Art Bell.

If that is what they told the Senators, I guess they would consider it sobering. Yikes. That would certainly set the stage for postponing or cancelling the election, and maybe the imposition of martial law. That is real scary stuff, all right. Please let this be more of this misadministration's usual scare tactics. and not something that could really be true.

31. If so, then Bush failed at his job. He didn't even TRY to improve
our security (especially port security). He just wanted tax cuts and an invasion of Iraq.

If there is an attack, THEN VOTE HIM OUT! We're not safe with him as president, he's shown that already and this would be the coup de grace.

33. We "don't hear a peep" because the news media usually
doesn't report on Democrats. If you watched the news this last year or two, you'd think that the Dems never said anything. But the Dems have been holding press conference, but no news reporters (or journalists) attended.

35. Bush gave Homeland Security money
as a reward to Republican states. The money should have gone to cities like New York and Los Angeles where the ports and entrypoints to the U.S. are. Instead, states like Wyoming got the money. The allocations were arguably criminal. If there are attacks, Bush and the Republicans will be responsible.
