House RollCall Patriot Act (210 to 210)
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 06:41 PM by khephra
Every Democrat who missed this vote should be ashamed of themselves! I'm sad to say my Rep, Julia Carson, missed this vote, as did ex-candidate Gephardt (when in the hell does he ever vote?).

4. Looking at the Newsday article

apparently, Ms. Harman (D-CA) was one of the four Dems to vote N.

I sent her this right away via the House web site.

I live in CA, but not El Segundo. Hopefully some of her constituents let her know what they think of this.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ms Harman,

It is being reported that you, alone, of the California Democrats in Congress, voted NO today on the amendment to the "Patriot Act" to keep the federal government from using libraries and booksellers as informant organizations.

I certainly hope the report is in error.

If you voted against this amendment, I hope that you reconsider your position on this topic, and support for the so called Patriot Act in the future. While I am in California, I'm not your part of your district, however, should anyone who is a true patriot and a true democrat decide to seek election in your district, I will support that candidate, much as I have supported other democrats around the country.

I cannot believe that you would support leaving the Patriot Act in place as is. Vote for more (and, hopefully, better) intelligence
gathering from abroad, vote for better border control, even vote to
restrict visas and immigration... but to vote against the freedoms that this country was founded on... sad. The right to read ANYTHING, hear ANYTHING, say ANYTHING (but not DO ANYTHING) is fundamental to being a citizen of this great nation. Your vote today in favor of restricting those rights (trust me, knowing the government has a right to find out what books I read or buy will restrict my right to read things) is simply shameful. And you are a Democrat.

The greatest danger facing us is NOT dirty nukes or bio terror or anything of the sort, the biggest danger is our own government deciding for us what we can read or say.

Unbelievable.

Shame on you.

And he's in my district - Adam Smith. Thanks for posting your letter. I might use it as a template for my letter to him, if you don't mind!

6. House defeats Patriot Act rollback
House defeats Patriot Act rollback

WASHINGTON, July 8 (UPI) -- Bowing to a veto threat from the Bush White House, the House Thursday defeated a move to rollback record search powers provided in the Patriot Act.

The amendment to the $39.8 billion 2005 Justice, Commerce and State Department appropriations bill was authored by Rep. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., and pushed by a coalition of Democrats and conservative Republicans.

It would have blocked a provision in the law allowing law enforcement to get special permission from federal courts to search the records of libraries, book sellers and other sources for information about individual user or purchaser's activities without their knowledge.
Proponents said the power is a threat to privacy that undermines individual civil liberties, while proponents said it is needed because terrorists use such resources to plan attacks.

House Republican leaders kept the vote open an additional 10 minutes past the traditional 15 minute time limit and persuaded 10 Republican members who had initially voted for the move to reverse their votes.

9. Julia Carson was on leave of absence for "personal reasons"
Carson was out for the entire week.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?r108:55:./temp/~r108MFyMLv::

She is absent quite a bit, I believe. I wonder if she has health problems or something like that.

Also, Maurice Hinchey was injured so he has an excuse.

12. Thanks! As much as I try, I sometimes fall behind on local news
because of my time paying attention to national and world news.

Yeah, she's had several health problems over the years, so at least she has a reason to have missed it.

Even Bartlett (the rep without opposable thumbs) voted against it. I think I need to send my rep (Van Hollen) a little thank you email.

Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 09:36 AM by treepig
do we no longer wish to unite and strengthen america? sure seems that way by leaving out the "usa" all the time, tsk tsk tsk,

USA PATRIOT Act is an acronym that stands for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism

16.  Mine missed the vote, too
Earl Blumenauer. That's a real disappointment.

But the Repugs held the vote open and arm-twisted their contingent just enough to get them to switch.

Khephra, I'm convinced that had our congressfolks been there, they just would have kept the vote open that much longer and threatened more Repubs to get their desired results.

Dems on the floor were chanting, "Shame, shame" as the GOP leaders held the vote open.

<snip>
The effort, including more than doubling the usual time for the roll call vote, generated outrage from those trying to change the library provision, who argued the House leadership again manipulated the rules to help President Bush's re-election effort.
