BRAZIL

Investment aimed
at oil finds off Iran

SALVADOR, BRAZIL - Brazil's government-controlled oil giant, Petrobras, is planning to invest $34 million in initial oil exploration activities in Iran, a top company director said Monday.

"I'm flying to Iran next week to sign the service contract," Petrobras international director Nestor Cervero said.

Last year, the Brazilian oil company won a license to explore oil in one of eight giant offshore blocks offered by the Middle Eastern nation in its first offshore licensing round.

1. Rightwing wants crusade on Iran, rest of world wants to do biz with them
It amazes me how hostile the rightwing is to Iran while the rest of the world is cutting business deals with them. Russia is building a pipeline in Iran. Brazil is looking for oil. French companies build shopping malls there.

Surely we don't want to simply be blind oil partners with Iran and ignore their repression of their citizens. But the Bush administration and the christian coalition paints Iran as a bigger evil than our current oil partners in Saudi Arabia.

To me, it looks like the Bush administration gets more mileage out of hostility than they do diplomacy. That's the biggest difference between Bush and Clinton.

2. The Saudis
are not trying to build a nuclear weapon. Having a "kill everyone" religion is part of being terrible. Having the weaponry to do it completes the deal.

I am worried about both Iran and Saudi Arabia. :-!

3. Remember how Iran was before *?
The fanatical wing was definitely losing steam. Slow and steady liberalization towards something resembling Turkey or Morocco seemed all but inevitable.

And then they're declared part of an "axis of evil". Sigh.

4. I guess that explains the need to invade Iran sooner than later.
I'm sure we'll be told it's all about the nukes.

Unfortunately, it's all about the fact that US oil companies aren't allowed to legally compete for business there, since the US has an embargo against Iran. And even if we could compete, the Iranians hate us so much they wouldn't give us shit.

So, time to depose the govt, and then take 'the spoils'. What's a couple hundred thousand dead compared to billions in contracts?
