Right wing "antidote" to F 9/11 in the works

Disney joins anti-Moore campaign

So now Disney is collaborating with the conservative group that tried in vain to keep Fahrenheit 9/11 out of theaters and threatened CBS last year until the network agreed to drop its TV movie "The Reagans." (The leader of this group was also involved in the unseating of California Gov. Gray Davis). You'll remember that Fahrenheit was originally scheduled to be released by Disney's Miramax unit, but the company dropped Michael Moore's movie because of the film's content. Now we have a better window into Disney's rationale.

Sorry we missed this press screening of Disney's film "America's Heart & Soul," which the company is touting as a cinematic antidote to Fahrenheit 9/11. On the VIP list, the invite says, were Disney reps, Howard Kaloogian and his colleagues -- and Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse!

From the press release:

MOVE OVER MICHAEL MOORE…
Disney & Move America Forward
Team Up to Show a Brighter Side of America

(SACRAMENTO) -- Move America Forward is teaming up with Walt Disney Pictures to present an exclusive screening of Disney's "America's Heart & Soul" on Monday, June 28, 2004 at the Crest Theater in Sacramento, California. The private screening takes place at 1:00 PM and members of the news media are invited to attend. "Americas Heart & Soul" opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, July 2nd.

Unlike the negative and misleading storyline of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," Disney's "America's Heart & Soul" features a collection of upbeat storylines of real life Americans who pursue their passions in a way that underscores what makes America a great nation.

WHAT: Screening of Walt Disney Pictures' "America's Heart & Soul"
WHO: Representatives of Walt Disney Pictures
Howard Kaloogian, Chairman, Move America Forward
Melanie Morgan, Vice Chairman, Move America Forward

Eric Hogue, KTKZ 1380 AM Sacramento
Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck
Political Leaders
Business Leaders
Invited members of the community

On its Web site, Move America Forward complains that: "Those who oppose the War on Terror have the mouthpiece of the mainstream media to disseminate their propaganda to the entire nation in an almost unchallenged effort. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week it is bash America, bash the military and bash the Bush administration." This, of course, is hardly true -- but it's even more ridiculous now that the company that owns ABC News is associated directly with Howard Kaloogian's anti-Moore efforts.

1. As the old saying goes:
"The early bird gets the worm"

Michael Moore has already set the bar. On top of that just because they show upbeat Americans doesn't mean that Bush is going to gain any momentum unless they really suck up to him and get a large audience.

9. Does Disney have to eat any of the tab for this?
Because, on top of losing F9/11, that just might be more than Disney shareholders can take.

60. Saudis are big shareholders in Disney ...
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 10:29 PM by maryallen
Recently, Michael Moore (in some interview -- can't remember which one) said that that the Saudis bailed out Disney's Euro-Disney project.

So, Disney may be in cahoots with the rightwing propaganda group, but my guess is that -- once again -- the Saudis are playing it to their advantage ... which is to help Bush-baby get re-elected so that Bush-Bandar can wield power.

I firmly believe the 'hand over' in Baghdad happened ahead of schedule largely to re-claim page one from a very embarrassing story today of a box office Cinderella. This matches everything Moore said about promoting Stupid White Men: people are starved for information!

Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 08:58 PM by nolabels
Other than a few " F " bombs and the execution (which you could hardly see and would miss if you didn't watch carefully) there was nothing that constituted them giving it that.

The funny thing I don't think it's stopping too many people from taking their kids to it. antidotaly I did see quite a few there this afternoon with the theater 3/4 full on a weekday mid-afternoon matinee.

It is better they gave it that rating just one clue, the audience seemed pretty hip to everything that went on the movie also. I sure there was thread about that " R " somewhere on DU

24. One does not preclude the other
and it is not necessarily an "America-centric viewpoint," though I will consider this point carefully (are you American?). My comment is based on the prior actions of the Bush* admin. and how they handle the news cycle.

This does not negate the likelihood that the handover on the 30th would have been a violent event. Let's see what happens in the next 48 hours.

I hope you are not insinuating that I have a "sad unawareness" of the dangers involved in imperialist adventures. If this is your opinion of me, personally, I welcome further explanation as to why and how you have come to this conclusion.

43. Thanks for the DU link
I am exhausted from studying for finals and was up all night. I was posting other thoughts on DU when the news (approx. 2:30 am) about the "handover" came out. My FIRST thought was: "They don't want Americans to discuss the success of F9/11!"

Perhaps I was tired... my eyes are still bloodshot since I haven't slept much since last Wednesday... but that was my honest-to-god first impression of this news. I had the SAME uninhibited reaction on the morning of 9/11. I woke up late (after it all had happened), walked into a room where my father was watching the events on TV, and he said "LOOK!" I then looked at the TV and saw the towers burning, but then turned to my father (Ret. USAF-SAC) and said, "Reichstag!"

Needless to say, I was admonished by many many people over the next few days, weeks, and months about this "first impression" I had. At least I heard one person echo my sentiment at that time - Ray Taliaferro on KGO AM San Francisco. Now, since I have lurked here for 3 years and recently joined DU, I feel I am in the company of people that try to think "outside the box."

I also appreciate any criticism of my ideas.

11. Doesn't sound like much of an antidote
I haven't seen it, of course, and I'm not saying it's not conservative propoganda (the move america forward crowd is loony), but there's nothing inherently inconsistent with saying there are amazing people overcoming amazing odds in america, while at the same time saying george bush lied and thousands have died as a result, etc. Allowing that kind of logic to slide by unchallenged is like allowing them to say things like NPR and Rush Limbaugh are just two sides of the same coin.

(Also, according to a user review on the imdb, Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's fame is in it.)

74. From the description, it sounds fairly innocuous...
Lots of "accentuate the positive!" happy-talk. and apparently even a few workers grousing about their jobs being outsourced. but it doesn't sounds like it *overtly* has anything to do with current issues, except of course the economy ("no, you aren't working more for less money! no, there aren't fewer opportunities! you're imagining things! buck up, fellow Amurrican!) Which is of course still significant. still, compared to the hateful bile that pours out of RW radio and Fux news, it sounds like a walk in the park. non-controversial, which will probably mean relatively modest BO.

Another hour or two to add to the hundreds and hundreds of cablenews and network news shows and TV movies and RW radio and newspaper articles which have already touted the Bush version that Michael's two little hours of time were meant to balance? They need more?

I guess they forgot something. Like some facts. Now let's see them come up with some meaningful rebuttals to the truth Michael has reported in F 9/11. No really.

Its not about Bush. Its a fluffing of patriotism based on "every day" (middle to uper class) americans doing all the amazing things they do. Whitch in a country this size is a fair amount...
Its a feel good human intrest story on the big screen. Turn your brain off and feel grand about the flag. From an opositon to F911 standpoint it is Brilliant. You get to refute Moore without ever having to argue a single point. But I do not think to many people will see it.

Mickey Mouse battles Michael Moore

America's Heart and Soul will be released on Friday

Tuesday 29 June 2004, 4:26 Makka Time, 1:26 GMT

Walt Disney Corp. may come to the rescue of a Michael Moore beleaguered-President Bush by unveiling its own patriotic documentary film.

The company that last month refused to release the politically explosive Fahrenheit 9/11 now plans to release the film America's Heart and Soul on Friday.

Supporters say the new film could counter-balance Michael Moore's hit film that has already taken over $23 million at the box office.

"This unusual film was inspirational," said Howard Kaloogian, chairman of Move America Forward, which has spearheaded a boycotting campaign of Fahrenheit 9/11 after attending a special screening of the film on Monday

BTW it looked like it was going to suck. Not just from a "Walmart Sucks" point of view but also from the "that movie sucks I woulden't even watch it on TV" POV. It seemed like the kind of thing that could not posibly do well at the box office with the exception of a hand full of people who are exceptionaly dedicated to sticking their head as far into a mine shaft as humanly posible.

Can that ex-felon, that upstanding renewed citizen vote in Florida? Sorry, he has to sacrifice a bit more to keep blacks from voting for Democrats.

There's some vinegar in your saccharin.

Uh, so back to not being a negativist. If that blind guy can climb a mountain the blinded public can overcome a mountain of fraud and vote in democracy? yes, WE can.

It is NOT just about the individual, America. Look to your society, to your family, to your future.

68. They'll buy tickets in bulk and show the film to empty theatres.
and/or hand out tickets at biblethumper/born again/ church services. Ashcroft will assign every employee at State and the FBI to go on opening weekend and take ten people with them.

Sounds just like those bogus introductions they do for every state of the union speech, where Bush tells some touching story about some poor schmucks sitting in a tense semicircle around a very tense Laura, who is sitting very straight, with her elbows clamped close to her sides so she doesn't come in any physical contact. The ideal highlightee would be an Afro-American female military veteran in a wheelchair, with a blind, Hispanic husband patting his seeing-eye dog, Tomohawk.

Seriously folks, they can't get around the Bush-BinLaden connections and the Halliburton scenes.

57. Christ, the first Republican socialist-realist movie - can't wait!!
Doubtless this will show happy, smiling workers marching off to their $5.25 hourly/28 hours per week Wal-Mart jobs, pausing only for a moment of group prayer in the employee breakroom before an energetic rendition of the Wal-Mart cheer brings theater audiences across America to their feet. It's just one of countless magic moments in a portrayal of America at the turn of the century - and at the turn of the tide.

But it's not just morning in America for those fortunate enough to work for greater good of the Walton heirs and the greater good of America. It's morning in America for everyone committed to turning the American Dream into a reality. "Gosh, it's a great day every day," 67-year-old Verna McDowell of Colby, Kansas exclaims as she prepares to clean toilets and empty bedpans at a local retirement home. "I'm lucky to have both this and the KFC job at my age, and I just thank God I'm able to be of some use."

Verna may work hard, and may care for three grandchildren since the meth convictions of her daughter and son-in-law brought mandatory minimum sentences of 20 years in Lansing. Verna's retirement savings may have evaporated, first in the Savings & Loan scandal of the 1980s, and then with the loss of her family's farm. But she never complains. "I guess I'm old-fashioned, but the bottom line is that I'm proud to be an American, just like the song says."

59. we've seen these films already
or one's just like them. They're on at 3 a.m. and preceeded by "The following message is a paid advertisement" or some such crap. You've seen them...

bald folks get hair, hairy folks lose it (then they get the girl/guy, the great job, win the lottery... life turns rosy)...

poor folks get rich buying up real estate, fiddling with the stock market, licking envelopes, stumping magazine subscriptions door to door (and went from two steps from bankruptcy to wealthy in like two weeks, got the girl/guy of their dreams, beautiful house... life turns rosy)...

fat folks lose hundreds of pounds overnight with no exercise and never feeling hungry (then get a six-pack stomach, a modeling contract, marry the girl/guy of their dreams... life turns rosy)...

Infomercials. Only utterly desperate and pathetic people buy into that nonsense. The only thing missing from these films will be the wonder mops and amazing air purifiers (but that's ok, when life turns instantly rosy, they'll get those wonder mops and amazing air purifiers at the incredible low price of $14.99 per month for 3 months).

82. That is a good idea
It would be quite a statement, if people who went to F-911 went to this movie with Kerry, Micheal Moore, Dean, etc. t-shirts. As you say, this movie sounds like some inspirational stories strung together, that are not the private property of any party.

Personally, I wonder how many people will pay good money for such a movie, though. It seems to lack conflict which is the basic building block for any story, documentary or fiction. Just a literary observation.

How much you wanna bet they will thorw a heap of cash at it? F 9/11 only cost 6 mill and has already tripiled its profit, If I owned shares of Disney id be hopping mad right now. Let them really, who cares just another shlub hopping on the Bandwagon after the booming success of F 9/11. See if they can take what they dished out at Moore who showed them whos boss.

Um, is that the same Disney that refused to allow Miramax to release F 9/11 because they didn't want to be partisan? Was it actually that they didn't want to be Democrats? Inquiring minds?

Oh, and this makes it blatantly obvious that Michael Moore was lying when he said the reason that Disney refused to release his movie was because Disney was afraid of pissing of Jeb Bush and possibly losing their Disneyworld tax breaks.

I hope these folks aren't introspective because it would suck to look in the mirror and realize that one is rationalizing, lying sack of sh*t.

90. Okay, speaking as a Disney Stockholder
I can't wait for this movie to come out.

When it bombs... and it will. My fellow shareholders will be so pissed, that they will rise as one, and slay the idiots in charge of our company.

Once we get new leadership in the house that Walt built, this company can finally start to turn itself around. The name Disney used to stand for something, it wasn't always a corporate behemoth soley bent on taking your money.

It use to inspire people, make them smile. People used to be happy to work there, there was a time that they didn't have to fake it.

There was a time when a Disney cartoon would come out and it would be original, funny, and very entertaining.

Now we've got these instant classics like:

Little Mermaid II
Lion King II
Lion King III
Cinderala II

Need I say more? What the hell is in the water over there that makes people think these are good ideas?

I don't thionk the current leadership can survive another big flop, they are standing on crumbling ground as it is. The sooner this crap film is released, the sooner Disney Co. will nosedive into the empty pool.

....to watching Eisner's demise....real soon....

Interesting hearing from an Animator? who is in Orlando...yeah, Eisner treated you all real well, didn't he?

I can't wait for F 9/11 to be such the hit and these other "losers" to bomb....

I'm actually boycotting Disney products right now...my 4 year old doesn't appreciate it, but she'll survive....

I know many say that Walt Disney was a conservative, but I think that was before the current so-called fascist "compassionate conservatives" and fundies hijacked the party....I can't believe that Walt Disney would approve of 80% of what is spewed out from Disney these days and while I'm not entirely certain that Walt ever would have had a subsidiary like Miramax that spins off non-traditional Disney movies, I can't ever imagine him "censoring" anything....

PS: Like the quote from Walt on your profile....
