House considers subsidized benefits for members, staff

The House will look into the possibility of offering members and staff subsidized dental and vision healthcare benefits under a proposal approved yesterday by the House Appropriations Committee.

Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.) offered the controversial legislation as an amendment to the $2.5 billion fiscal 2005 legislative-branch appropriations bill, which the committee marked up yesterday.

Before Doolittle introduced his measure, the committee had approved an amendment offered by Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) that would commission a $175,000 study to determine the feasibility of offering staff dental and vision benefits. Upon completion of the study — to be conducted by an outside company — the House Administration Committee would ultimately decide whether or not to go ahead with the plan, Moran said.

4. None of these "federal" amendments
that benefit Congress ever filter down to the secretaries and janitors who are also government employees.
