Website launches campaign to deter Fahrenheit 9-11
WHO PAYS THE BILLS FOR "MOVEAMERICAFORWARD.ORG"
A web site has launched a campaign to deter theater owners from showing Michael Moore's film, "Fahrenheit 9-11". A list of theaters currently committed to showing the film is provided along with exhortations to call and demand that the film be dropped. Some theater owners are reporting receiving death threats.

This web site, "http://moveamericaforward.org", is actually an alias for "http://moveamericaforward.com". A DNS check reveals that "http://moveamericaforward.com" is being run by a Public Relations firm out of San Francisco.

Russo Marsh & Rogers is a political public relations firm with strong ties to the GOP. Sal Russo, a principle in Russo Marsh & Rogers, served as advisor for the "Recall Grey Davis" campaign.

So, I guess we know just who is behind the campaign of threats and harassment against theaters showing Moore's film!

8. Hell No!
And lose all that free publicity?
All this ranting against the movie just makes even more people wonder what's so 'special' about the flick that they can't go and see it, so they will go and see it!

15. Will this "ranting" go on in public?

Or will folks just call theatres and ask the film be dropped?

In the first case, I'd agree that the publicity is great. In the latter case, I'd be more inclined to claim the behavior is tortious.

So is telling a theater you don't like them showing a particular movie.

Let them have their fun. It won't work.

14. Found a site saying Howard Kaloogian Recall Gray Davis Committee
http://www.sfpolitics.com/html/elections/election_people_detail.cfm?txt_name_first=Howard&txt_name_last=Kaloogian

Found something almost unrelated, looking for info. on Kaloogian you might find interesting. He tried to become the GOP Senate candidate to run against Boxer but lost. This article was written before the primary, and discusses Boxer's situation in California:
This year Boxer is much better positioned for re-election, with $5 million stashed away for November as well as what looks like a healthy lead over whoever wins on Tuesday. Last week's PPIC poll showed her trouncing an unnamed GOP candidate, 53 percent to 36 percent. With so few people paying attention to the Senate primary contest, the GOP nominee probably won't get the kind of free-media boost that has been helping Kerry in head-to-head polls against Bush. Moreover, a lot of Republican money will be channeled to states with closer Senate races, such as Alaska, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.
(snip)
http://www.nationalreview.com/miller/miller200402250932.asp

(I hadn't heard which states are close. It would be great to get a list of the close states beyond these 4.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kaloogian served the people of California as a Republican Member of the California State Assembly from 1994-2000 after a successful business career helping senior citizens with their estate planning. Kaloogian was selected as Asssistant Republican Leader, where he led the fight for smaller government and lower taxes.
Assemblyman Kaloogian made history as Chairman of the Recall Gray Davis Committee, an effort which ousted Democrat Governor Gray Davis from office. Kaloogian set up the Recall Gray Davis Committee and its website, www.RecallGrayDavis.com, even fighting off members of his own party who were too timid to act. Davis became the first statewide elected official recalled in California’s history.
Considering Ronald Reagan to be one of his political heroes, Kaloogian agreed to lead the Defend Reagan Committee (website: www.DefendReagan.org). He led hundreds of thousands of Reagan supporters across America to fight against the smear campaign waged against Reagan by CBS, Viacom and Showtime with their anti-Reagan production, “The Reagans.” So many Reagan supporters flooded the offices of CBS and their sponsors with complaints that the movie was cancelled on network television. (:crazy: :silly: )
A champion of Proposition 13 and taxpayer hero, Kaloogian is a leading voice for fiscal responsibility, individual freedoms and conservative values. Kaloogian has advanced the issues important to him and the people of California as a conservative radio talk show host, noted convention speaker and documentary host. He is a frequent lecturer on topics surrounding economics and the detrimental effects of over regulation and stifling levels of taxation.
With loons like this trying to chase Michael Moore around, he can only benefit. Hoping his movie goes over the top.
38 is old enough to know better. But maybe he knows the Democrats are too yellow to say anything. But I bet Michael Moore wouldn't be. Perhaps he'd like to interview the Sgt.
I believe that that is the saem Aaron Russo whom ran for governor unsuccesfully in Nevada in 1998, and ran again unsuccessfully in the Libertarian primary this year.
In their twisted minds, being a good American means threatening movie theatre chains with death? Are they going to commit domestic terrorism? What is wrong with these people? They are seriously disturbed and I think we should start an opposite campaign, one of support for the various theatre chains that are going to be harassed, or whatever. Because of them, I may go to see this movie many times, which is something I never do. Assholes.
28. Yes, very solid. Reminds me of what DU used to do often--
A member would take it upon him or herself to compile a text with hotlinks to all the news versions of a story with snippets. Organizing and intelligently presenting the material with some minimal commentary. Then park it in Editorials, where it tends to have a longer shelf life. (Then you can post links to it whenever a new thread elsewhere mentions it, and update it, &c.)
Yes, most welcome to DU.
64. hear hear.
Ah, the good ol' days :)
On a tangential point (but one related to the substance of your post) : are you still keeping tabs on the Moussaoui FISA issue? And if so, what are your thoughts on the following snippet from Ashcroft's recent testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee?
-----
source: C-SPAN broadcast of Ashcroft testimony
RealPlayer link
(Quote comes from 2:00:46 into the clip)
"The first ... first or second thing that happened to me after I got into office was a call from the FISA Court saying that we needed to renovate the FISA operation. We did, and that was early in the year 2001 ..."
-----
The reason this struck me is that it puts Ashcroft personally on-the-record that Bush & Co. knowingly made alterations made to "the FISA operation", that it happened early in 2001, and that it was the "first or second thing" Ashcroft dealt with after assuming office.
The name "James A. Baker" comes quickly to mind.
Anyway, just tossing that out, in the spirit of the old DU :)
Any thoughts?
29. Kaloogian is the SAME person WHO STOPPED REAGAN MOVIE AT CBS!
WE WON THIS ONE FOR THE GIPPER!
More, from WND's article about CBS's cavein at:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=35415
"Howard Kaloogian, an organizer of the California gubernatorial recall, has
launched a website DefendReagan.org he claims has vaulted into the top 5
percent of all sites after just three days online.
"This shows you the strong emotions people feel towards the smear campaign
CBS is waging against President Ronald Reagan and Nancy," he said in a
dispatch yesterday.
Kaloogian is asking supporters to contact Viacom, owner of the CBS network,
as well as CBS directly.
"We are going to make sure that when and if this anti-Reagan miniseries airs
that there is a 'rebuttal' that speaks the truth about Ronald Reagan's
accomplishments and points out the lies, smears and distortions that CBS has
engaged in," Kaloogian said.
He plans to place prominent ads with TV Guide and USA Today at a cost of
about $200,000.
Kaloogian says the sponsors he was told were advertising on "The Reagans"
are "all frantically scurrying for cover." "
TAKE ACTION people, and send positive emails to the theatres they're trying to intimidate.
Iraqi General: US Helped Us as We Used Chemical Weapons
by Aaron Glantz
BAGHDAD (IPS) - The Iraq issue today may never have arisen if it were not for the support former U.S. president Ronald Reagan gave Saddam Hussein.
Reagan died Saturday June 5 in his Los Angeles home.
Reagan's two terms as President correspond roughly to the Iran-Iraq war, the longest conventional war of the 20th century.
Saddam Hussein invaded Iran on Sept. 22, 1980 with the stated goal of gaining control of the Shatt al-Arab, the river that has formed a border between Iran and Iraq, and which would give Iraq better access to the Persian Gulf.
The U.S. government was then interested in containing Iran, which had just become one of Washington's major enemies after the Islamic Revolution lead by Ayatollah Khomeini. U.S. hostages had been taken, and Ronald Reagan had just been elected partly on the strength of criticizing President Jimmy Carter's inability to free them.
30. Aaron Russo...2004 Presidential Candidate who Managed Bette Midler!
"Biography for Aaron Russo
Although he never went beyond secondary school, Aaron Russo became a millionaire in show business. He managed the Kinetic Playground in Chicago in the late 1960s where he booked The Who, Jefferson Airplane and other popular bands of the day. For seven years, Russo managed Bette Midler. In 1979, he produced "The Rose" which gave Midler her first starring role. After producing a string of films and directing "Rude Awakening." Russo turned to blending radical politics with entertainment. He tried to sell a pilot for a television show called "Aaron Russo's Mad As Hell" in the early 1990s. When he was unsuccessful in selling the controversial program to networks, he began selling the pilot as a video in 1996. In 1994 he tried to start a political party called the Constitution Party. In 1998, however, he ran for the Republican party nomination for governor of the state of Nevada. (He lost.) In 2000, he supported the Libertarian party.
Trivia :
Is running for President in 2004. May seek the Libertarian Party nomination."
It was big news here in Vegas - was not exactly a weak candidate, when he should have been villified.
Lost in the primaries to our current Gov., who, for a repuke, is actually not half bad - only when compared in light to the rest of the repukes in gov. positions around the country. In some locals, he would qualify a holding Democratic beliefs. He is to the extreme left of Zelly boy DINO Miller and Lie-berman!
Experience Really Does Matter.
When it comes to winning elections, few firms can match the success of Russo Marsh + Rogers, Inc.
The experience of RM+R’s staff is one of the greatest advantages you get when you recruit the Russo Marsh + Rogers team of political professionals and campaign experts.
The principals and associates at RM+R have been involved in more than 350 campaigns at the local, state, federal and international levels.
In addition to our experience in almost every state in the nation and in countries such as Nicaragua and the Ukraine, the expertise of RM+R’s staff extends to every aspect of campaign strategy and design.
44. Russo Marsh & Rogers contact info
Not only do the Republicans not want you to go see Moore's film, they also don't want you to know they are behind the campaign to smear Moore and pressure theater owners into not running the film. It's just like the Republicans to do this sort of thing behind your back. Of course, it is rather lazy and stupid of the Republicans to not think about WHOIS. But then nearly everything about the Republicans lately -- from the lies behind the invasion of Iraq to clumsily attempting to cover up the TortureGate scandal -- has been lazy and stupid.
Don't be fooled. The Bush Republicans are behind this now transparent effort to silence Michael Moore. If you care about the First Amendment and don't like the idea of Republicans dictating to theaters what movies you can see, write Russo Marsh & Rogers and tell them what you think. The contact person is Douglas Lorenz and his email address is: [email protected]. If you live in Sacramento, you may want to drop by the Russo Marsh & Rogers offices and ask why they want to censor movies: 770 L Street, #950, Sacramento, CA 95814.
47. We can use their info - maybe we should be thanking them
http://www.moveamericaforward.org/MichaelMoore/ - has a long list of single and chain theaters with live links to email addresses for each. For theaters or theater chains in each of our areas, we can write to them, thank them for committing to air the picture, and let them know we will be there as customers.
It would have taken us a lot of work to get all this information together!! Let's make sure we make the most of it. The theater owners like the sound of ka-ching, even if their decision to air the picture had nothing to do with politics (and in most cases, it probably didn't, especially for the chains).
cool
Sal Russo said the recall is a device that
gives the people a voice in government--
and that it’s not being abused by rich egomaniacs.
"Californians disapprove of the job that Gray Davis is doing. This isn't a Republican Party effort; the Republican Party initially wasn't even for it. Big business, big labor and big political parties are against this recall. It's the people that are for it."
Dear Management of Loews Cineplex
It has come to my attention that a right-wing PR firm is orchestrating a campaign to intimidate your company into curtailing your plans to show Michael Moore's important and prize-winning documentary, *Farenheit 911,* at Loews/Cineplex theaters. As a regular customer of your theaters, and a moderate registered independent, I encourage you to discount this campaign and not yield to the intimidating tactics of these people. I am looking forward with great anticipation to seeing this film and will pay to see it -- probably several times -- at a Loews theater in solidarity with your decision to show it. Moore's film, though controversial, won the Cannes festival Palme d'Or, one of the highest international honors any film can receive. Moore has produced a series of important documentaries in his career, and members of the American public have a right to decide for themselves whether they wish to see a film critical of the current administration's policy in Iraq.
I commend you on your decision to show the film. I am deeply impressed.
Sincerely
XXXXX
62. If this information proves correct
Making death-threats against theater owners in order to induce compliance with a political agenda -- this is the textbook definition of domestic terrorism, and it should be prosecuted as such, including charges of criminal conspiracy against any individuals and businesses who have provided (or are still providing) material support to the perpetrators.
These thugs have gotten off far too easy, and for far too long.
72. story from Daily Variety -- Moore branded a "domestic enemy:"
 Posted: Mon., Jun. 14, 2004, 5:06pm PT
Org ignites '9/11' fight
Move America Forward aims to chill doc's B.O. prospects
By DAVID ROONEY
NEW YORK -- A conservative group that pressured CBS to cancel "The Reagans" miniseries last year now is leaning on U.S. theater owners to drop Michael MooreMichael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" from their release lineup.
Dubbed Move America Forward, the new org was formed last month to rally support for U.S. troops in Iraq and for the Bush government's proclaimed war on terrorism. "Michael Moore has the right to free speech," said MAF chairman Howard Kaloogian. "But so do millions of Americans who find his anti-military propaganda and attacks on our troops offensive."
Kaloogian is a former Assemblyman from Carlsbad, Calif. who was active in last year's gubernatorial recall.
Describing documaker Moore as a "domestic enemy," MAF urged the public to take a stand against the film and its director, supplying phone contacts and personal email addresses for execs at national and local theaters where "Fahrenheit" has been booked. That list includes both mainstream commercial chains and specialty exhibs, among them Loews Cineplex and Landmark Theaters.
<snip>
"One of the most important lessons everyone can take from 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' whether they support the war in Iraq, oppose the war or are undecided, is that we need less censorship in this country, not more," said Tom Ortenberg, president of Lions Gate Films Releasing. "With that in mind, it is particularly distressing to see certain organizations calling for the censorship of this film."
Separately, distribs are preparing an appeal against the Motion Picture Assn. of America's decision to give the film an R rating.
90. Hardly a bad film...rottentomatoes.com gives it an 80% rating!!
For those unfamiliar with rottentomatoes.com, they compile reviews from across the country, determine which are positive and negative, and assign a an average score. Anything 60% or above is considered "fresh," and below that "rotten."
Most movies don't even make it to the "fresh" rating, and scores of 90% would be considered a classic of historical proportions. Well, Fahrenheit 911 has achieved a score of 80%!
