More than 89 percent of respondents to a Mississippi congressman's unscientific poll said the U.S. Justice Department should reopen the case of three civil rights workers killed near Philadelphia, Miss., 40 years ago this month.
The two-week poll ending this week was on Rep. Bennie Thompson's official congressional Web site and received 2,138 hits. Thompson, a Democrat, said he posed the question in response to the Justice Department last month reopening the investigation of Emmett Till's 1955 murder near Money, Miss.
"I believe there is a willingness in the part of Southerners to put a lot of this stain behind them by moving forward and actively investigating and prosecuting past civil rights-related murders," Thompson said.

Regardless of the poll, the U.S. Attorney's office in Jackson is reviewing the case after a request late last month from Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, Department of Justice spokesman Eric W. Holland said Thursday.
