I guess they liked him as a vigor "cowboy" but did not know what to do with a sick old man; they wished him to disappear from the face of the earth - the way they wish for the many who are sick or poor or old and cannot take care of themselves.

he will not and should not rest in peace.
Reagan did so much damage to so many people. He had enormous power as president of the US, and could have used it for good.
But he chose not to. He chose to abuse that power in criminal ways.
His soul will burn in hell for the poor that he refused to help, that he mocked, that he deprived of assistance.
His soul will burn in hell for the people murdered by the right-wing death squads that he set up and funded in Central America.
His soul will burn for the damage his right wing extremist agenda and his right wing minions continue to wreak on this country.
Condolences to his family. But Reagan himself deserves to rot in the darkest pits of hell.

You may like manners, but I prefer history.
Reagan funded death squads in Nicaragua, infamously comparing them to the "moral equivalent of our Founding Fathers."
Reagan slashed Federal aid to the needy, turned the mentally ill out of institutions, and built out our shameful prison system and escalated violence on our streets with his "war on drugs."
Reagan eviscerated the regulatory protections that kept corporations at bay, unleashed financial institutions in ways that produced the S&L meltdown, and scourged the environment.
Reagan ushered in the era of merger madness that has downsized so many jobs for the benefit of the rich.
Reagan plunged the nation into massive debt through his irrational, unnecessary military spending.
Reagan facilitated the flowering of Christian right wing politics that spreads intolerance across the land.
Reagan, in the end, was the intestine that produced the shit we know as Bush.

Eased a bit by having help, no doubt. My uncle died last year and he'd had the same disease. I don't think my aunt will ever be the same from the toll it took on her. Even with someone to do the things that she had to do to take care of him, being there with the person you've spent your life with...only he's not really there that's just horrible.

quiet dedication and fortitude in handling these 10 years of hell are admirable. YEs, she had the benefits that very few have, including SS officers to aid with the extensive home health care staff that only wealth (and a Presidential pension) could provide. Nonetheless, the basics of dealing with seeing someone you loved no longer "there," and reverting to helpless child, can not be easy.
She also brought us Ron Jr. and Patty. Ron's a jewel, IMO.

earlier in another thread - he could not have been all bad - he helped raise Ron Jr. I don't know much about Maureen (edit: is it Patti?), but I haven't heard anything bad about her.
My dad had dementia, so I know what the family was going through. It will be sad for them, but also a great relief. I'm glad it's over for them.

The right loves to claim he was well loved and popular. But in fact that is and was a myth.
He was not well loved except among the right wing crazies who are currently running this country.
Think of all of the damage he and his legacy have inflicted on the most vulnerable parts of the US population. Think of all of the damage that he inflicted in Central America, Iraq and Iran, Afghanistan, etc.
He will only be missed by those who have drunk the right wing koolaid or his fellow criminals on the right.
So don't feel bad.

This morning I was reading Salon and I saw "Reagan's health said to have deteriorated" on the left hand newswire thing. I didn't read the article, but I thought about how much it's going to suck when he dies. The way people worship him is bad enough, but when people die they tend to take on mythical status. Maybe it's because it's unacceptable to speak ill of the dead or something, which I've never quite understood. He's dead. That's probably the first time in anyone's life when that person finally just really doesn't give a shit what people say about him.

As someone who has I can tell you that anyone who has endured Alzheimer's should be able to feel relief for the family that he's passed on. | 63. He died at age 93, the past ten years spent in total unawareness |
|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 04:13 PM by Marianne
He lived a long life and in his illness he had the best of care as well as his family and wife.
Many of us will die ten years earlier because we do not have the care or the access to the dare that this man did.
He did nothing for us. You know, us "little people" who have worked hard all of our lives, and did not slough off, and still are struggling at the age of seventy to buy food and to buy medicine.
He deserved nothing more than the rest of us who have watched loved ones be put away in nursing homes because they have Alzhiemers'. What great thing did he do that is greater than what any of us has done?
He lived a long life and he did nothing to deserve this special treatment that others in this country do not seem to deserve unless they are wealthy. and that is really sad and that says to me that people in tbis country really need to look out for themselves.
I cannot really pretend to be sorry that someone has died at the age of 93, who had all of the perps to keep alive to that age, when the proles or the paeons do not have the same.

Shame on all those DUers who are cursing him minutes after he passed away. He was President, and he was a human being... he should be accorded the respect that comes with both. Finally, as one who had a family member with Alzheimers, this has not been easy on his family. DUers, you are better than this.

this has nothing to do with alzheimers or his family.
He was an evil man. He was a criminal. He inflicted enormous damage on the most vulnerable people in this country. He wreaked tremendous disaster on poor innocent people in Central American, Iraq and Iran, Afghanistan, etc.
We are currently living with the legacies of his antidemocratic right wing extremist agenda.
While his family can be condoled, he absolutely does deserve to be cursed.
He lost any chance of respect for being a human being over the course of his 8 years as president.

and the family having to deal with it should be separated from what the individual "accomplished" during his life.
A short list of accomplishments:
Iran/Contra: "I don't remember"
Saved those poor medical students, caused numerous deaths, and the medical students asked afterwards "what the hell was that all about?"
Made "B" movies that should have been D- rated.
Had nothing to do with the fall of the Berlin wall. Let's see, spending the nation's resources on the military/industrial complex by the billions, TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH, and weakening this nations infrastructure caused the communist world to fall.
Just like *, said he would be fiscally responsible. Remember what happened then? It was the same thing that is happening now.
Separate the disease from the person. Shitheads are shitheads, whether they get hit by a bus, or die from a terrible, long, drawn-out disease.

Who would have thought back in 1963 that JFK may have been responsible for Marilyn Monroe's apparent suicide, or that he would have nearly gotten us all blown to bits because of a few missiles in Cuba, or had been involved in President Diem's assassination, or that he got our country deeper into the Vietnam muck?
There are no saints, only sinners!
I wonder if Bush will give federal workers a day off for Reagan's passing, perhaps without pay in memory of Reagan's legacy.

I meant to post that this morning when he was still with us. Anyway, the burden of his wrongdoing no longer rests on him. At this moment, he is probably being judged for what he has done. The real burden rests with those of us who are still here.
Can we forgive a man who harmed so many? Many of us forgave Lee Atwater, only because of his deathbed confession(s) and because we learned of his true burdens after he was gone.
But can we forgive Reagan - a man who was unable to make any such confession? That's a hard one. I ain't going to forget. That's for damn sure. Neither is Nelson Mandela. Neither are a LOT of people. But forgiveness? Yes. I pray that he is judged fairly, and I hope he rests in Peace.

he terrorized millions of us when I was in high school; we were all CONVINCED that that crazy ____ was going to destroy the entire planet in a nuclear holocaust. I don't think I spent a single night during my teenage years not fearing what he might do to us all. I honestly can't say he did anything at all to make the world a better place (the USSR would have failed no matter what). But I have mixed feelings about his passing. My grandfather had Alzheimer's, and the longer one lingers with that disease, the worse it is for the one afflicted and all those around them.

is about the right approach to take. I'm not particularly dancing a jig--Alzheimer's really is horrible, and I think (not that i always adhere to this) gloating over death and suffering is just sort of bad karma in general. I *am* glad he's no longer with us, let's put it that way. I'd be a lot *more* glad if I thought that this were somehow heraldic of the end of an era, of twenty-five years of right-wing backlash, and that we could now start swinging the other way. Ultimately, though, when it comes down to it: he's just another guy who died. As will we all.

CNN) -- A spokeswoman for former President Ronald Reagan Saturday downplayed news reports that his health is deteriorating.
In a statement, Joanne Drake, Reagan's chief of staff in Los Angeles, said: "He is 93 years old. He has had Alzheimer's disease for 10 years. There are plenty of rumors. When there is something significant to report, I will do so."
According to sources familiar with the situation, the White House has been told Reagan's death could happen in "weeks or months."

Here's hoping Bush doesn't access his black bag and rapture us all to commemorate the passing of a Neo-con icon.

|
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 04:21 PM by David Zephyr
Tens of thousands Of people with AIDS died due to a callous White House in the 1980's and as a direct result of Ronald Reagan's reluctance to deal courageously with the AIDS epidemic that began under his stewardship of the nation. Further, nearly the entire decade of the 1980's was a lost period of time which allowed the disease to gain a tremendous foothold here in the United States and abroad.
I am sorry that President Reagan has passed and feel sorrow for his family.
I buried a lot of my friends during the time when Reagan was President and when the tone set from his White House was that these people were dying in shame.
This will forever be a major part of the Reagan legacy. There's no escaping it.
Today, his death has brought back a lot of memories of people who would be alive today...had not medical research been delayed for nearly ten years. I grieve for them.

I will not mourn his passing, I will mourn instead for the truly egregious damages wrought upon our nation by the rise of the right wing that he abetted.
My condolences to his family, of course. Having recently lost one of my uncles to Alzheimers, I can guess that their grief is no doubt tempered with relief. It is a foul disease, and a bad way to die.
Yes, we will now be beset with much maudlin mythologizing of this man, who was, imho, already in the early stages of that dread disease even as served out the last years of his term as president. Fate has smiled upon us, however, in that Reagan's passing has happened now, rather than closer to the election.
Oh well, interesting times...

|
I'm surprised that no one has brought up his butchery in Central America, including funding the terrorist group the contras, and propping up murderous regimes in El Salvador and Guatemala.
A human righs commission came to this conclusion during the Clinton years (after the fighting had more or less stopped). It is not difficult to find irrefutable evidence of the US's support for murder, mainly under Reagan.
Without Reagan's support, tens of thousands would still live.
He might have been a nice guy, but so what? Some of Hitler's henchmen were family men too. I think this official policies far outweigh any personal charm.
