Breaking On CNNI...Major Fire Fight in Kufa...ongoing for over 1.5 hours
Edited on Sun May-30-04 03:33 PM by maddezmom
Truce seems to be for all intents over. Troops have come under heavy fire. al-Sadr's spokesman has reported the US military entered the city from 3 locations. I guess just another day in Iraq. :eyes:

this is the only link I can find:

~~~
Two American soldiers were wounded in the clashes around the holy city, Najaf, the military said. Fighting erupted Sunday night in Najaf's twin city, Kufa, and Shiite militiamen accused the Americans of firing near the main mosque, damaging its outer wall.
10. update: Major Fighting Reported In Kufa, Najaf, Chalabi negotiating
~snip~
In a report from Kufa, CNN, which has a reporter embedded with 1st Armored Division troops there, said a "major firefight" broke out late Sunday when soldiers tried to secure a police station. CNN quoted soldiers as saying it was the most intense fighting in the area in the past six weeks.
~snip~
Despite the clashes, Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi, who traveled to Najaf to help shore up the agreement, said there was "a momentum for peace" and Shiite leaders were "working to implement this so we can avoid any clashes."
Chalabi met with al-Sadr aides Sunday night and told reporters later he worked out a "detailed plan" for implementing the truce and would present it to U.S. and Iraqi officials Monday.
"We ask both sides to stop hostilities," Chalabi said.
12. Don't know why they are trying to secure the police station
There was a report earlier that all the Iraqi police who were bussed into the area walked off the job because they were not paid extra for combat pay.
Every military action over there seems so uncoordinated.
They have every right to walk off. They are being paid to service and protect the people. Not to help the US fight a war. Good for them.:smoke: :beer:
13. Juan Williams
When he took over from Ray Suarez, I was shocked at how stupid he is in comparison. Just another empty talking head toeing the line at the Voice of America.
Two US soldiers killed in Iraq clashes
Mon 31 May, 2004 07:26
KUFA, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. armoured forces and Iraqi militia loyal to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr are fighting near the holy city of Najaf, the fourth day of clashes since Sadr offered a truce.
The U.S. military said two soldiers from the 1st Armoured Division were killed late on Sunday around the town of Kufa, one when his patrol was ambushed by gunmen and one when his tank was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade.
Another 1st Armoured soldier was killed earlier on Sunday, bringing the total U.S. combat death toll during 14 months in Iraq to 591. They were the heaviest U.S. losses in the area, 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad, for some time.
Local residents and militia fighters in Kufa said U.S. tanks advanced into the town toward the main mosque and skirmished with Mehdi Army fighters based around it for about two hours around midnight.
More at the link, including info on damage to a mosque, how the U.S. broke the 'truce', and Chalabi's laughable attempts to paint himself as independent of the U.S. by 'negotiating'.
