Author ("The New Iraq") arrested for smuggling ancient Iraqi artifacts
http://www.boston.com/dailynews/221/region/Author_arrested_for_smuggling_:.shtml

NEW YORK (AP) The author of a book on rebuilding Iraq was arrested at Kennedy International Airport for allegedly smuggling stolen 4,000-year-old Mesopotamian artifacts out of Baghdad, authorities said Saturday.

Joseph Braude, author of ''The New Iraq,'' was released on a $100,000 bond after a preliminary appearance Saturday before U.S. Magistrate Roanne L. Mann at the Brooklyn federal courthouse.

Braude, 28, was arrested Friday night after arriving at the Queens airport on a flight from London, said U.S. Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf. Braude actually brought the priceless stolen artifacts into the United States on June 11, she said.

... A Columbia University professor, called in to examine the seals, determined they were Mesopotamian Cylindrical Seals of the Akkadian period, dating back to 2340-2180 B.C. They were apparently swiped from the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad, authorities said.

1. Finally!
My hunch was right about this freakish fraud.

He was slowly becoming a voice of punditry in the media

So nice to see that the truth came out about this thief.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Maybe Borders/Barnes and Noble, etc. will stop shilling his book...

7. Salon had this guy's number
Pretty impressive how they nailed this phony right away. I'm interested to look back and see how the whores treated him. Much more credulous than Salon, I'd bet...

snip:

A phone call to Braude's publisher reveals that the author never set foot in Iraq while researching this book, and the Globe profile says he has never lived there. (He does appear to have visited the country as a child.) His publisher explains that as an Iraqi-American Jew, Braude couldn't get a visa to enter the country, despite many efforts. Braude can't be blamed for the Iraqi government's policies, but he is responsible for how he represents himself and he should have been upfront about this. Instead, as in his dedication of the book to "Daniel Pearl, of beloved memory" -- a man who, it turns out, Braude never knew -- he fosters false impressions by artful omission.

The U.S. has made the decision to invade Iraq and eject its current government. (By the way, in another example of evasion posing as imaginative daring, Braude refuses to take a position on the action, dismissing those who do as paying "lip service" to an excessively "polarizing" discussion.) We're now obligated, by our own moral posturing and self-interest, to help that country pull itself out of the hole. Perhaps we do, as President Bush seems to believe, have many fine things to bring to the effort. But if a glib and opportunistic slickster like Braude is any indication of who's about to descend on Iraq, we'll just be adding insult to injury.

2. He'll probably get off; but I would favor his
getting the maximum sentence: $250,000 fine AND 5 years in the slammer, hard time.

3. Maximum exposure

would be fine if it did not mean he would not resurface like all such swamp monsters do with renewed shelf life as redeemed and repentant still-doing-evil evil doer.

Maybe he should just be sent back to one of re-opened Saddam gaols.

6. It saddened me to see history destroyed and stolen.

I was studying some of this stuff before "Bushan the Terrible" waged his reign of terror.

If he's proven guilty give him the maximum sentence, some paper and a pencil.

How many more aritfacts are missing again?

What's this I see?

''This oil is not property of Czar Busholai II, but stolen goods that belong to the people of Iraq,'' said Martin Ficke, special agent in charge of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in New York."
