Germany's Fischer against western troops in Iraq

BERLIN, May 28 (Reuters) - German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said on Friday there should be no western troops in Iraq and reiterated his opposition to a NATO presence there.

"I am of the firm opinion that western troops under any circumstances will be seen as occupiers," Fischer told the German parliament during a debate on the Middle East.

Iraq was therefore no place for NATO and a deployment of its troops would endanger the alliance, he said.

Germany was a vocal opponent of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
