| New intelligence suggests terror operatives in U.S. for major attack |
|
Edited on Tue May-25-04 06:44 PM by Newsjock
Edit to add link, with more infohttp://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/2591618 Associated Press WASHINGTON -- U.S. officials have obtained new intelligence deemed highly credible indicating al-Qaida or other terrorists are in the United States and preparing to launch a major attack this summer, The Associated Press has learned. The intelligence does not include a time, place or method of attack but is among the most disturbing received by the government since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, according to a senior federal counterterrorism official who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity today. Of most concern, the official said, is that terrorists may possess and use a chemical, biological or radiological weapon that could cause much more damage and casualties than a conventional bomb. "There is clearly a steady drumbeat of information that they are going to attack and hit us hard," said the official, who described the intelligence as highly credible. more

I know this isn't just a stunt! And I am sure that THIS intelligence is much more credible than the intel we have been getting. That is besides saying that there will be an attack inside the US...saying it every month means that when it does happen the admin will say they warned us and were on top of thing. You know the old 'stopped clock' thingy.

The intelligence does not include a time, place or method of attack
Oh well, then...there's nothing Bush or his employees can do about it. After all, they need a date, time, and location to take action.

Geezz...isn't this just dandy. The US military and all of our money are in Iraq fighting the terrorists. But now we hear that the terrorists are here and are planning to attack us. I guess "All Americans have been Drafted!" I guess we all better go buy guns. I wonder if the Bushco will pass out fatigues? I guess the best part is that none of us has to go through boot-camp. But how will we learn how to torture the terrorists after we capture them?

They already did the East Coast- They wanna hit the West Coast.
my guess, NOT right before elections. DEFINITELY this summer right before the release of the Farenheit 911 movie.
The Bush crime family does not want people to see the Michael Moore movie for obvious reasons.
I'd bet they'd do just about anything to prevent people from knowing the truth.
AND, After the terra attack they can not only ban the movie but they can round up all opposition and send them to Gitmo...including Moore himself.

As soon as I read this alert last night I thought "is this some kind of ploy by Rove to gain support for Bush?" I know this sounds conspiratorial but just look at this quote from Ashcroft today: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/nation/terror/200405... The withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq due to the political repercussions of the March 11 train bombings in Spain, Ashcroft added, could lead al-Qaeda to attempt to influence U.S. politics.
"Al-Qaeda may perceive that a large-scale attack in the United States this summer or fall could lead to similar consequences," Ashcroft said in remarks prepared for a news conference.I seriously hope this is not the case but I would not put it past them.

But... suddenly I thought that perhaps the White House folks were putting this out there to show how UTTERLY prepared they are THIS time.. I started thinking, as I read that this is the most credible threat since 9/11, and that they've assigned new task forces, etc.. I honestly believe they would make this shit up for political reasons, as in, 'oh, look at us we're SOOO on top of this!' Then when it doesn't happen, aren't they the big heroes. Perhaps, we'll even have "proof" of an arrest near the election of some Middle Eastern people, purported to be the masterminds.. and that Bush saved our asses, and we need to be grateful by voting for him! If this is so damn important, why hasn' the terror level been raised? AND.. if the 9/11 intelligence and chatter was SO fucking important, WHY did they let it happen???????????

if he declares martial law after an attack occurs, and cancels the election. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph... Al-Qaeda boosted by Iraq war, warns think-tank 1 hour, 32 minutes ago Add World - AFP to My Yahoo! LONDON (AFP) - The US-led war on Iraq (news - web sites), far from countering terrorism, has helped revitalise the Al-Qaeda terror network, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) think-tank warned. The London-based body said in its annual Strategic Survey 2003/2004 that the deadly train bombings in Madrid in March, the worst terror strike in Europe for more than a decade, showed that Osama Bin Laden's terror network "had fully reconstituted". snip But another legacy of the war was what the IISS termed a highly questionable recourse to pre-emptive strikes as a means of counter-proliferation, as well as "the uses and abuses of intelligence as a basis for military action." The IISS said the United States, which has dominated world affairs since the end of the Cold War, had failed to understand that Al-Qaeda's September 11, 2001 attacks were "a violent reaction to America's pre-eminence" and it urged the superpower to temper "the appearance of American unilateralism". more http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/iiss...

From the BushCo Gang's friends at Faux news http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,113972,00.html E-Mail: Attack on U.S. '90 Percent Ready' Thursday, March 11, 2004 CAIRO, Egypt — An Arabic newspaper said Thursday it had received a claim of responsibility for the Madrid train bombings issued in the name of Al Qaeda (search). The claim also said that a major attack against America was "90 percent ready." The five-page e-mail claim, signed by the shadowy Brigade of Abu Hafs al-Masri (search), was received at Al-Quds al-Arabi's (search) London offices. It said the brigade's "death squad" had penetrated "one of the pillars of the crusade alliance, Spain," and carried out what it called Operation Death Trains. (snip)

Thus time to gin up the fear machine. "We don't know where when or how but just be afraid," the unnamed "highly placed important person" tells us ominously. Having far more specific information in the summer of 2001 they did nothing. Now having no specific information these Chicken Littles run to and fro shouting of impending doom. They are as predictable as flatulence after consumption of baked beans and equally odious. When Junior's poll numbers head south the terror alerts are as sure to follow as night after day or Halliburton executives after government contracts.

Nothing racist intended, simply the notion that one tends to "stick" to (even become like) what one opposes.
Nonetheless, it's staggering the degree to which the shrub admin's actions have had the unintended (I believe, though some wonder about that) effect of giving al-Qaeda huge incentives for recruitment, not to mention opportunities for direct attack.

I wonder what's going on? I'm not prejudice or racist or even anti-semitic. I'm just a little paranoid about a group of people hanging around places they shouldn't be at and not have a solid story to tell when they're caught.
I think those Isreali movers are the ones planning something and Bush knows it because he's in on it.
I'm certain soemthing will happen only because Bush thinks it will send his number straight up to 100%. It will either happen around the release of Farenheit 9/11 or a few weeks before the election.
I've never been skeptical of my government until Bush screwed things up.

Facts are, the moving vans full of Israelis is just too weird- especially when you recall the story of the ones shooting video of the twin towers on 911 and celebrating as thousands died.
As an analyst I respect encourages us to ask- "In whose interest?"

a big dust-up about Israeli spies in the US about 20-30 years ago. I think they were just deported, but no doubt some are still at work (we probably have a few in Israel as well). One has to think that if Israel is anything at all like the United States, it will do whatever it deems necessary for its own security and survival. So it would be naive to completely discount the possibilities.

Sounds like another LIHOP or MIHOP set-up to me. If they know there are terrorists in the country, they better f***ing pay attention and get them beforehand. Makes me wonder how they know this.
"U.S. officials have obtained new intelligence deemed highly credible indicating al-Qaida or other terrorists are in the United States and preparing to launch a major attack this summer...."
Yep, the public needs another distraction, so that the election can be called off. Bush's approval rating down, Iraq war going badly, so let's produce another terra-ist scare.

Something that would seem to catch "al Qaeda's" eye: that those who disagree with the policies that drive Osama bin Laden to attack us (our one-sided support of Israel no matter what, plus our military might in Middle Eastern countries propping up dictatorships) have no affect on our government.
What's more, and this is key:The b*sh administration especially, and the United States government in general, really does not care about the citizens.
We are not so valued to the Powers-That-Be that they would concede to any terrorist's demands - and they really would not mourn our loss much if "al Qaeda" killed us. How do I know? We had September 11th, and not only did the government as a whole get right back to work ripping us off and taking our rights away, they ramped up the usual effort, with even some fairly liberal Democrats assisting in the screwing (Patriot Act, IWR, etc).
We are expendable in the eyes of the government.
I find it impossible to believe that a savvy terrorist like bin Laden would not see this now and realize that killing America's citizens simply won't work, because our deaths do not move the government much.
It's a disturbing thought, but I feel it is, unfortunately, true.

such as PNAC headquarters and any number of Repug "think tanks" (oxymoron?) if policy change is the objective, but perhaps the terrorists are shrewd enough to realize that if powerful people are targeted, the government might respond with precision and actually take out the instigators. If it's just some of us ordinary Americans, any response will do as long as it looks like they're doing something.

| 160. Question:Why does Al'Qaida spend so much time cold chillin' with Allah? |
|
If there are so many 'Qaida operatives and they are so organized why aren't travelers from Israel and the US being picked off worldwide? Why is there no overt 'terrorism' in this country? Are these the kind of Al 'Qaida who spend all day cold chillin' with Allah and never get down to business? This is a big country with open borders. If you believe these guys have the wherewithal to orchestrate 911 (I do not) you gotta wonder, why don't they hit us again and again in a hundred different ways. Allah knows, we got it coming. If you are going to play by your own rules, as the US claims of 'Qaida, why would you engage US soldiers in open combat, as we claim happens in Iraq? If the goal is to destroy, disrupt and terrorize by any means possible, why not take the war to the heartland of the US or to those countries where vacationing US citizens and zionists are easy targets? Such operations could be carried out in complete anonymity with little or no chance of recourse. If you would shoot a US soldier then duck and cover, why not create havoc in the US in anonymity; obviously they don't always feel the need to die in the act. And what of those less intense disciples who wish to destroy the US and Israel but have no taste for instant martyrdom, what are they up to? Terrorism: Bush's BIG lie

So, let me get this straight--9/11 happened after you got "disturbing" intel, and you sat on your collective asses and did nothing (except maybe help it along.) You wailed that you had no way of knowing what they were gonna do. NOW you are telling me you had "disturbing" info then--just like you have now????

Edited on Tue May-25-04 10:43 PM by jokerman2004
So the first thing you have to ask yourself is which one of Karl Rove's contingency plans will go into effect if something like this happens? I expect these guys have literally engineered scores of back up plans full of political dirty tricks for all kinds of unthinkable scenarios.
It would be unimaginable if they didn't have some dirty tricks ready to dust off in the event of a horrendous, and shocking terror event like the one they've been foreshadowing in the media-script so far.
Will it be power, or communications, disrupted perhaps in a way that might delay or effect the election? Or will it merely be another horrendous pattern interrupt in the national psyche that will make us once again psychologically vulnerable to a whole new season of lies?
I worry, but will refuse to be afraid.

Or how about we get a scene by scene cliffhanger of how Bush's new America defeats the terrorist threat, and although only a liberal population was tragically effected, it could have been far, far worse! Lets start a tinfoil party and figure out all the ways a bunch of unprincipled criminals could cynically take political advantage of a real terrorist event in America! Exception: You may not include use of a national guard for martial law, 'cuz our boys and girls are otherwise occupied in the cause of plunder elsewhere. This plan has to be cynical and manipulative, and use fear, confusion, and ignorance as weapons -- the way these guys always do what they do.

because the old fear wore off already.
bushco uses the same tactics on us as they created for use in abu ghraib. they pick what they know will get to us the most, the security of our everyday lives, and they threaten it randomly whenever it seems we might be vulnerable to it again. it's just another form of torture and intimidation to attempt to control the vote. that's it.
i think in the back of every American's mind there's a little voice that says "hey, if we oust bush and company, i bet all of this terror stuff will quiet down, because people won't hate us as much. then maybe we can start being nice to other countries again, instead of acting alternately like a bully or a sullen child."
ok, i'm giving the back of everyone's minds too much credit. but you know what i mean.

We busted a very well-educated Pakistani man last week in Tyler who was here illegally and was trying to buy twenty silencers and some detonators. There have also been some odd thefts and some caches of machine guns, real ones, not the "assault weapon" stuff, have been found.

Could he have hooked up with some of the local loony militants in Gun Barrel City? And could they have set him up to buy that stuff for them (as an initiation rite, etc.)? Seems like it might be win-win for them, since if he's successful they get more stuff to add to their arsenal, while if he gets caught, no one would believe that he would be associated with a militant white supremacy group, so they get off the hook.
Far-fetched?

I don't believe a thing that comes out of that snake's mouth, but I do believe the FBI and other agencies when they claim they have successfully thwarted recent attempted acts of domestic terrorism.
It's total tomfoolery to suggest that it can't happen here. It has, and it's been going on for a long time.
Increasingly, our state and local law enforcement has realized that this is everyone's problem, and that Homeland Security bullshit aside, nobody is really doing anything on the federal level to stop it. It's our job now, 'cause they can't do it and won't fund it. I can guarantee you nobody is going to break into the Mellon-Scaife estate and attack that. Nevertheless your tax cut to the Scaifes and others like them ensures we don't have the funds to protect at least two dozen places on our borders which can be easily be infiltrated through legislative error--or perhaps, intention.
There have been at least six bills and perhaps three dozen pages devoted to the Congressional Record exposing the leaks. They've already caused one false alarm which was used to swing the 2002 elections. You find the holes, fuckers, 'cause I can't do my job anymore and I'm just waiting for the balloon to go up. I'm not going to help you, because I suspect "the terrorists" are just as stupid as Republicans, and they're not going to see it or listen to it, either.
Nevertheless, the people on the ground know that they're all alone and have to figure it out for themselves. You can count on them to do their best, which at this point I would rate a solid 50-50 chance of stopping it in most places. Your government at work.

|
Ok, so the first time people were too shocked and patriotic to ask real questions and rallied round their president. But another time -- won't people get a little curious about the coincidence of it all -- just in time to boost Bush's sagging poll numbers; alternatively won't people hold him responsible for not securing the country -- I mean he boasts all the time about how he's got al Qaida on the run, etc. I mean like he's the 'war president' and all. I wonder if they're going to hit California in an attempt to win it's electoral votes? Am I cynical or what? Stuck inside a mobile with the Memphis blues again -- I've got to get outa here!!!

I can't even begin to fathom the consequences of another terrorist attack *in* the US. Along with the human toll and all the political repercussions, as a Muslim, I'm terrified to think of the kind of backlash that there's going to be if something like that happens. I think the sentiment is already there, the spark is needed to make things go wild. People were patient after 9/11, I don't think they will be if something happens again, God Forbid.

Yesterday this was the headline at NYT: "Contradicting news reports Tuesday saying that new information pointed to a specific threat, the officials said Mr. Ashcroft and Mr. Mueller had no new intelligence to suggest that an attack was being planned or that preparations were under way.Instead, the officials said they would issue a new call for public awareness and ask again for the public's help in apprehending suspected terrorists who have long been sought by the F.B.I. and whose names are on the bureau's Web site." snip "I can confirm that we have seen for the past several weeks a continuous stream of reporting that talks about the possibility of attacks on the United States," Mr. Ridge said on "Today." But he said the flow of information was "not unlike what we've seen for the past several years." There was also some information about this being release to get peoples attention in order to kick off a new public awareness campaign. (there are several threads in General Discussion about this-I just found this one which links to this source: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_I... Meanwhile, others like Reuters and NBC are reporting: A senior level official -- who didn't want to be identified -- told The Associated Press that "a steady drumbeat of information" indicates terror groups in the United States have plans to -- in the official's words -- "hit us hard." The Associated Press has learned that U.S. officials have obtained new intelligence deemed highly credible that indicates terrorists in the U.S. are preparing to launch a major attack this summer. A senior counterterrorism source said the intelligence is among the most disturbing received by the government since Sept. 11, 2001. http://www.nbc5.com/news/3346122/detail.html??z=dp&dpsw... So the NYT just yesterday said the didn't ask tough questions about Iraq. Where are the questions about this conflicting info and haven't they been burned enough by quoting 'senior administration officials?" I swear they think we are stupid!

How did they get here? We have been told repeatedly that * and company are doing their jobs and keeping us safer, after all he's the wartime resident, so why all the fuss.
Seems to me it's the other way around. * is not doing his job and not keeping us safe. If he was doing what he should be doing, there wouldn't be this problem at all.

| 141. "Intent on disrupting US elections" |
|
They implied that Al Qaeda was trying to disrupt the election. Why? Because they were "emboldened" by "their success" in Spain earlier this year.
Message: Al Qaeda is TERRIFIED of George W Bush. They want an appeasing pussy like John Kerry in power, so they can go ahead with their plan to install an homosexual Islamic Communist government in the US.
The Spanish people gave in to Al Qaeda's threats by throwing out the American puppet president. Red blooded Americans must not make this same mistake, and instead should show resolve, as to prevent the Muslim Holocaust on Christians and Jews.
(Um, I hope it's clear that these paragraphs address the "spin" of the Bush administration, and not my beliefs....)
Ooops -- they seem to have gotten the facts wrong -- the Spanish people did not vote out Aznar because they were terrified of Al Qaeda -- but because Aznar LIED to them about who was responsible for the Madrid train bombing. Ashcroft is hoping that most Americans don't remember this....
My conclusion: latest round of TERRA! TERRA! TERRA! alerts is more bullshit, or at the very least is meant to persuade us that terrorists wish to influence the US elections, as to oust their greatest enemy, Crusader Bush. So -- in order to fight evil Doers, we must fight our impulse to send Whistle Ass back to Crawford -- right? I think this is the message they wanted us to get out of this little event today.
I ask: what the HELL does Al Qaeda give a shit about American elections? I don't think they give a shit WHO IS president, nor do they choose symbolic dates. They strike when they are ABLE to strike, and they do not care who among us they kill.
The idea that Al Qaeda thinks they can influence our elections is bullshit. However, it is logical and feasible to imagine that the Bush administration WANT Al Qaeda to strike before the election, so His Chimperial Highness can run on fighting terra once again -- because, having lost the war on terra, all that boy has to run on these days is Gay Marriage.

We have reason to believe based on "chatter" from unidentifiable sources that someone wants to hurt us badly and is planning to do it sometime within the next few months. We don't know who, what, where, when, or how, but we are pretty sure that it is possible that this may happen because people hate us for our freedoms.
Don't let the terrorists win! Go buy some stuff.

THey are expecting 200K people at the WWII Memorial Dedication this weekend.
Many are, obviously, the surviving soldiers from the war fought by the 'greatest generation' (its arguably true that they were just that...) against the most obvious 'evil' we've ever known in our times.
Can you imagine the blow to our national psyche if that event were hit by terra-ists, and they were all taken out somehow? How PISSED America would be?
I hate to say what a perfect target it is, cause I REALLY would hate for anything like that to happen.
But, hey, looking on the bright side - if it did happen, we all know how much bushco love to take care of our veterans, right? Well, what a huge load off the VA payrolls THAT kind of event would be!
(sorry, just had to go there...)

This is just a rehash of vintage garbage the White House has known about for years - e.g. so-and-so was last seen in the Boston vicinity in early 1992. They're just publishing faces. It's bullshit. Nothing but an attempt to distract the American public from the catastrophes besetting Dubya & Co.'s distastrous policies which are finally coming home to roost over the past 2 months. The Karl Roves are so desperate they think they can win this election if they try to scare the bejesus out of every American with such phony "news" items -since they are in total panic mode as to what to do with all the caca raining down on their collective heads. They've now begun to reap what they've sown, and it's showing in all the polls. Look, Clark, in his book, has said everyone in Washington has known for year and years there are al-queda operating in this country with plans to do their worst. This is absolutly nothing new. So where's the orange alert if it's so new and supposed to be so damned scary??? Just consider the timing. That's all you need to pay attention to.
