White House Asks Media to 'Show Respect' to Bush Twins
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/politics/politics-campaign-bush-daughters.html

Filed at 3:43 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House asked the media on Monday to ``show respect'' for President Bush's twin daughters as they emerge from private life as students to work for their father's re-election campaign.

There has sometimes been tension between Bush and the media over coverage of his daughters, Jenna and Barbara, especially when both of them had run-ins with the law over alcohol three years ago.

In an incident in Austin, Texas, in 2001, Barbara was sentenced to perform community service and attend an alcohol awareness class, while Jenna, who had been found with a false ID, was fine $600 and lost her driver's license for 30 days.

(The twins) will do an interview and photo spread for Vogue magazine and then work at Bush's campaign headquarters in the Washington suburbs.

MORE - not much

2. Wait a minute...
I was the first to say, "hands off!" when they were private citizens, but they are actively working on Daddy's campaign now. I'm sure he will trot them out when necessary. Are they untouchable now?

Good question.

I said the same thing when they were college students, with private lives. But now, they are over 21, and performing in a public capacity.

I say they are fair game.

45. Yup.
I was there to say "off limits" as well, but if they are going on the campaign trail to say what a great dad they have, then it's fair to ask why they were getting drunk and arrested. The moment they step in front of a microphone they are fair game.

70. You bet. If they're coming out from hiding, they've "graduated" from
college, and they're of adult age, then all's fair. Certain elements in the media were MOST unkind to Chelsea ("White House dog," anyone?) and I'm sure it was really miserable for her. These little dilletantes have been coddled and covered for, and they don't have HALF the brainpower, commitment or work ethic that she does. If they choose to stick their heads up out of the foxhole, then all bets are off.

Although... I must admit if they're trashed too much, that MAY build some sympathy for their parents, specifically their dad (and watch him hide behind their skirts like the brave-heart he is), then I'd be against it. I don't want ANYTHING to build sympathy for this schmuck. NOT ANYTHING!!!!!

10. Truly. My thoughts, as well.
Why don't they ask Rush Limbaugh for his educated opinion on the matter of just how much liberty people in public life should take with the President's daughters?

Maybe they might try to recollect the kinds of things which were said about Amy Carter, as well.

Republicans have so much to be proud of.

15. Yeah, just like they showed such respect for Chelsea beginning
by the OxyRush calling her the "White House Dog"...digusting.

I do believe president's kids should be off limits, but if the kids are producing fake IDs and getting drunk as hell...well

You just KNOW that if Chelsea pulled this shit, it would be all over the news 24/7, so I don't particularly like being "barked" at and told the twins are off limits. That's what I really object to.

12. how about this lovely piece by John Derbyshire?
http://www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire021501.shtml

excerpt:

Chelsea is a Clinton. She bears the taint; and though not prosecutable in law, in custom and nature the taint cannot be ignored. All the great despotisms of the past — I'm not arguing for despotism as a principle, but they sure knew how to deal with potential trouble — recognized that the families of objectionable citizens were a continuing threat. In Stalin's penal code it was a crime to be the wife or child of an "enemy of the people". The Nazis used the same principle, which they called Sippenhaft, "clan liability". In Imperial China, enemies of the state were punished "to the ninth degree": that is, everyone in the offender's own generation would be killed, and everyone related via four generations up, to the great- great-grandparents, and four generations down, to the great- great-grandchildren, would also be killed. (This sounds complicated, but in practice what usually happened was that a battalion of soldiers was sent to the offender's home town, where they killed everyone they could find, on the principle neca eos omnes, deus suos agnoscet — "let God sort 'em out".)

We don't, of course, institutionalize such principles in our society, and a good thing too. Our humanity and forbearance, however, has a cost. The cost is, that the vile genetic inheritance of Bill and Hillary Clinton may live on to plague us in the future. It isn't over, folks. Dr. Nancy Snyderman, a "friend of the family" (how much money did she give them?) is quoted as saying that Chelsea shows every sign of following her parents into politics. "She's been bred for it," avers Dr. Snyderman. Be afraid: be very afraid.

Such respect!

69. My suggestion for a chain e-mail
Spam them to death! Begin e-mail:

Look at this outrageous POS some scumbag blogger posted about the Bush twins:

Jenna and Barbara are Bushes. They bear the taint; and though not prosecutable in law, in custom and nature the taint cannot be ignored. All the great despotisms of the past — I'm not arguing for despotism as a principle, but they sure knew how to deal with potential trouble — recognized that the families of objectionable citizens were a continuing threat. The cost is, that the vile genetic inheritance of George and Laura Bush may live on to plague us in the future. It isn't over, folks. Karl Rove is quoted as saying that both twins show every sign of following their parents into politics. "They've been bred for it," avers Mr. Rove. Be afraid: be very afraid.

Fuming yet? Wait, the best is yet to come...

The above quote was not about the Bushes, but rather about the Clintons. I just altered some names to ascertain just how righteous you Republicans really are. To date, I know of no such vicious attack on W's daughters. Here is the TRUE quote, which is by John Derbyshire of National Review and can be found at http://www.nationalreview.com/derbyshire/derbyshire021501.shtml :

Thought he was so funny, so painfully, excruciatingly witty, he did. He refused to apologize despite a storm of protests and objections and complaints that the National Review Online got for this. Anyone who puts themselves in the public limelight is fair game. In this case it would behoove the Dems to steer clear.
Maligning them will only help Bushco because it will make the attacker seem mean spirited and garner sympathy for them. Seems that the WH spin Doc is inviting attacks to help the Bushco scampain.

Ignoring them would be the best approach.

54. Valid point!
Methinks they rather enjoy the attention, so ignoring them could be the best thing to do. If Kerry had a female attack dog (like Hughes), it might be ok to criticize the twins!

40. I do not honor anything this village idiot asks
He is the same guy that has used every dirty trick in the book and ,more to destroy the lives of many innocent people and Valerie Plame is the one that stands out the most in my mind, since this is a felony that has yet to be investigated after all this time. Now--he wants people to not trespass upon his sweet dumb daughters? They are working to have their fascist father elected. They are supporting the fascism of their stupid father. They could have refused and gone off to Europe on vacation--there they are and as such are fair game.

53. Sorry Georgie, hands off is fine if they're trying to be private citizens
But now that they are voluntarily becoming public figures, the kid gloves are coming off.

58. No R E S P E C T

I don't and won't have any respect for those vulgar twins. They have no respect for their own parents and their parents are constantly bailing them out of trouble.

They also have shown NO respect for our country. Representing us in Europe with jeans and tee shirts. If Chelsea had done that they would have been mean.

I am sick of Rethugs telling me how to behave. I am well aware of how to behave, they need to stroll down their own memory land.
The nerve of them.

59. In a word....
...no. Show them the same level of respect that the media showed (and continue to show), Chelsea Clinton. Which is to say, none.

And, now that they're out of school and working on their sire's reselection campaign, they're as fair game as any other person working on that campaign.

63. Barbara and Jenna who?
I refuse to give "celebrity" status to the Bush twins. Nope. Ignoring them, like I do their dad is my plan. If I wanted to debate the philosophical and cultural "significance" of a starved-for-attention, wealthy, drunken, slutty brat, I'd discuss Paris Hilton.

65. Respect must be earned
They're adults. They can be either private citizens, or active participants in their progenitor's campaign. If they choose the latter course, they become public figures IMHO: what treatment they receive should depend on how they act.

I would have liked someone to send me to Europe after my college graduation, and get me a job (unless the two are working on the campaign for free - nice not to have to worry about putting food on their families :)

67. They are 21 & their Father is a War Criminal-I'll "respect" them when they
...speak out against their father for the criminal he is...

Since its pretty obvious that they "inherited" Dad's intellect, I highly doubt we'll ever see that, so I say it's open season on the girls....Sorry, but look what they have done to Chelsea Clinton & recently Alexandra Kerry...

Besides, the "Bobsey Twins" have done their own Poor PR with their behaviour - if they do things that are questionable, they should be questioned...

78. Bushies Would Have Us Do As They Say, Not As They did
So the Bush Leaguers would have us treat the Bush daughters with respect? Asking for such a courtesy would command more respect if the Bushies hadn't given their silent assent to the torrents of abuse heaped on Chelsea Clinton.
