BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A loud explosion sent clouds of smoke into the air on Monday near an entrance to the "Green Zone" compound in Baghdad where the U.S.-led administration is based, and soldiers at the scene said they suspected a car bomb.
The blast, close to Iraq's Foreign Ministry, flipped at least one car into the air, soldiers said. There was no word on any casualties.

5. Brits in Iraq Blast

British security men are thought to be among four people killed in a car blast outside the Coalition's headquarters in Baghdad.

Independent sources told Sky's David Bowden two British protection teams were caught up in the suspected vehicle bomb.


The blast happened in the green zone, in the so-called safe zone, outside the headquarters of the Coalition Provisional Authority.

US spokesman, Colonel Mike Murray, said the nationalities of the dead were not known and it was not clear whether the car had been targeted by a roadside bomb or had been carrying a bomb.

The Foreign Ministry is nearby.

9. reuters update: Grenade Attack Kills at Least Two Britons in Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Guerrillas fired a rocket-propelled grenade at foreign security guards in a civilian vehicle in central Baghdad Monday, killing at least two Britons and setting the car ablaze, officials said.
The four-wheel-drive armored car was attacked near an entrance to Baghdad's "Green Zone" compound where the U.S.-led coalition is based.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, in Brussels for EU talks, told reporters two British nationals were killed and a third wounded.

"These deaths are shocking and they show the risks which British and other civilians have to take in order to assist the Iraqis in the necessary task of rebuilding and reconstructing their country," he said.

Security sources in the Iraqi capital said the car belonged to a private security company and that it was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

11. Baghdad Blast Kills 4 - CBS

An explosion ripped off the roof of a car near an entrance to the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition in central Baghdad on Monday.

Four foreign men in the car were killed, said an Iraqi policeman who saw the blast. Britain said two of its citizens were among those killed.

At least two more explosions were heard later Monday in central Baghdad. Their causes were unknown, but smoke rose in the vicinity of coalition headquarters.
