CIVILIANS IN PRISON SCANDAL RAISE QUESTIONS
And both - interrogator Steven Stefanowicz and translator Adel L. Nakhla - have been named by an Army investigation as suspects in the graphic allegations of abuses at a prison outside Baghdad.

Still, the forces driving the growth of such firms aren't going away, he said, particularly the contradictory pushes for an expensive, high-tech yet smaller military, and the likelihood of more conflicts in the future.

In 1954, there were 3.3 million active-duty U.S. military personnel. By 1980, that was down to 2.0 million, and by 2002, 1.4 million, according to the Defense Department.

The privatization of military power carries other dangers, too, like the possibility of greater instability as firms are hired by competing political movements or nonstate groups like drug cartels.

Iraq may yet prove to be a case study, he and Avant said. "There's a fledgling private security industry in Iraq which nobody's watching, which is all in bed with militias and the Republican Guard," Avant said.

4. I keep hawking a game for a reason
Armagedon 2089, they posit that by 2050 the DoD is privatized into
General Defense Corp... it is a scary future they posit, but one that is possible under these peoople

They took the worst case scenario and then worst cased it...

And they did an amazing job

Hence why I really do not like to play that RPG... too close to real life I guess

3. Equatorial Guinea pigs enter the legal maze
So, if Equatorial Guinea's legal system is still sunk in medieval darkness, South Africa will drag it, even reluctantly, into the Renaissance. One has, grudgingly, to admire the ambition of this project even as one doubts its outcome - and perhaps even its real motives. Certainly it seems that the government's intervention has ensured a public trial. That would make our nationals luckier than the six Armenian airmen also arrested in the coup plot. Unconfirmed reports say they have already been secretly tried and sentenced to jail terms ranging from 15 years to life.

anybody familiar with the Zimbabwe mercenary story?

Did you know there were American airmen arrested with them?

5. "... or nonstate groups like drug cartels."
It'd be naive as hell to think that's not already the case with the billions and billions collected in drug profits over the past 24 years.
