Schumer proposes emergency signal corps for city
NEW YORK (AP) _ Sen. Chuck Schumer said Saturday that he plans to propose legislation that would give New York $25 million in federal funds if the city agreed to reassign hundreds of police officers, firefighters and paramedics to a special signal corps dedicated to assuring smooth communication between emergency agencies.

The signal corps would research new technologies and respond to the scenes of major emergencies, Schumer said. The plan would allow the mayor to appoint team captains from several agencies to be trained for the signal corps.
