Maine Democrats OK on Kerry nomination delay
http://news.mainetoday.com/apwire/D82NOOD02-142.shtml

PORTLAND, Maine — Mainers headed to the Democratic National Convention, and some who want to go, said Saturday they have no problem with John Kerry´s idea of delaying his presidential nomination to gain more time to capitalize on his fund raising.

"If we have the opportunity to approach what (President) Bush has, I think we should go for it," said state party Chair Dorothy Melanson, who will be a national delegate. "It´s strategic."

Delegates and delegate candidates said they would not be deterred from attending the national convention July 26-29 in Boston if Kerry decides to delay his acceptance. The Republican National Convention will be Aug. 30-Sept. 2 in New York.

While an important function of formally nominating the party´s candidate would be lost that week, the convention would still serve as a forum to build party unity in an important election, they said.

The later Kerry becomes the nominee, the longer he´ll be able to raise and spend private funds.

1. the problem is
if Kerry does this, then what stops Bush from just turning around and delaying HIS nomination?

The gap remains the same, Kerry looks sneaky, and whats accomplished?

3. * already did, moving the convention to pimp 9/11
Rove wanted this as close to 9/11/04 in NYC as possible. What a miscalculation!

12. step off
first of all, just because someone else besides me can think and put two and two together doesnt make me a republican.

second of all, its called common sense...check into it. All Bush has to do is spin it to say, well since Kerry doesnt want to play by the rules, reluctantly, I will be forced to delay my nomination as well.

Then we will have the obscene scenario where Bush is spending the entire post nomination amount in less than two months time like a drunken sailor.

But yes, you are right, its all an elaborate ruse and plan of which I am a part of to make Kerry re-think this...after all, I am sure he scans this board daily to make his decisions.

7. I'm fine with it. Kerry should do whatever he has to do to win.
If delaying the nomination gives him financial help, then I say "Go for it!"

After all, Kerry didn't have all year to plan for this, but Bush did. Why play by Bush's rules since they were designed to help Bush and hurt his opponent?

Is it unusual? Yes, but our entire campaign financing system is a mess.

8. I look at it this way.......
They go through the calling of the states and voting and he wins. Kerry gives a "speech" at the usual time at the end of the convention (he just fails to say the words "I accept"). Most of the dumb population won't know he didn't accept. A month or whatever later, he sends a letter to the DNC or whatever accepting. I don't see the problem. It's not like they aren't going to let Kerry speak.

9. What happens when Kerry accepts the nomination?
Couldn't he technically never accept it, and win the election?
