Conyers asks whether torture denial was a lie
WASHINGTON -- The ranking Democrat on the House of Representatives' Judiciary Committee wants a congressional probe into whether the Justice Department misled the Supreme Court last month when a government lawyer told the justices that the United States does not engage in torture.

On Wednesday, Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., asked committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., to launch an investigation into whether the Justice Department ''may have knowingly or recklessly communicated false and misleading information to the U.S. Supreme Court.''

Conyers' request focuses on arguments that a lawyer for the Bush administration made before the court on April 28, hours before the first pictures showing abused prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq hit the news.

That day, the justices heard arguments in cases that test whether U.S. citizens designated as ''enemy combatants'' can be held indefinitely without charges or access to a lawyer.

1. And a bit more:
"Deputy U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement responded that the United States has signed international pacts ''that prohibit torture and that sort of thing.'' He specifically told the justices that the government does not engage in torture."

..The Lie..

Conyers noted that at the time of Clements' remarks, Department of Defense officials were investigating abuses at Abu Ghraib and the brigadier general in charge of the prison had been removed from her post.

Conyers said he wanted to know whether information was presented to the court that the Justice Department knew to be false or whether information had been withheld from the solicitor general's office.

A spokesman for Sensenbrenner said the chairman had no comment. Justice Department spokesman Mark Corallo said the department had no comment."

13. I believe I heard on the O'Franken Factor yesterday that someone
has audio tapes of Enron stating "we will take money from Grandma Millie" and laughing. It had to do with the California rolling blackouts and Enrons involvement in that mess. I believe it was someone from the Center for American Progess and she speculated that the administration knew what Enron was doing.

If there are audio tapes, I wonder why they haven't been made public?

16. Anyone notice what Conyers said?
"That day, the justices heard arguments in cases that test whether U.S. citizens designated as ''enemy combatants'' can be held indefinitely without charges or access to a lawyer."

I hope this isn't code for taking the "Training Wheels Off"...
