Equatorial Guinea coup plot extends to UK

Equatorial Guinea is seeking the extradition from Britain of two businessmen who were reportedly involved in an alleged coup plot in the central African state, a British minister said.

British Minister for Africa Chris Mullin said he had been approached by Equatorial Guinea's foreign minister with the request and that London was open to discussing it.

"There is a process that has to be gone through. The foreign minister of Equatorial Guinea came to see me," Mullin said at a news conference in Johannesburg.

"I put him in touch with the appropriate people, but a lot would depend on whether anyone extradited from Britain could face a fair trial," Mullin added.

Local newspaper reports said a statement made by the alleged leader of the coup plot in oil-rich Equatorial Guinea, South African Nic du Toit, linked British accountant and management consultant Greg Wales and Lebanese businessman Elie Calil to the plot.
