South Africa rejects Uganda Aids study
By Jennifer Bakyawa & Agencies
August 8, 2003

South Africa has rejected a Ugandan study in which HIV positive mothers were given Nevirapine to curb the transmission of the virus to their babies.

According to a press release from the South African Health-e News dated August 6, the South African Medicines Control Council rejected the study last week.

According to The Star newspaper of South Africa, the council informed the drug's manufacturer, Boehringer-Ingelheim, on Tuesday that it had rejected a Ugandan study on which the registration of Nevirapine was based.

For its part, the World Health Organisation has continued to support the use of Nevirapine.

“WHO agrees with the National Institutes of Health report and the accompanying statement, which emphasize that there is no evidence that the scientific data from the HIVNET012 study demonstrating the safety and efficacy of Nevirapine are invalid,” a recent release states.
