Rice Touts Democratic Hopes for Iraq(Association of Black Journalists)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29221-2003Aug7.html

National security adviser Condoleezza Rice likened Iraq's halting path toward self-government to black Americans' struggle for civil rights in the 1960s, imploring black journalists Thursday to reject arguments that some people are incapable of democracy.

"We've heard that argument before, and we more than any should be ready to reject it," Rice told about 1,200 people at the National Association of Black Journalists.

"The view was wrong in 1963 in Birmingham, and it is wrong in 2003 in Baghdad and in the rest of the Middle East," she said.

"We should not let our voices waver in speaking out for people seeking freedom and never, never indulge in the condescending voices who say that some people in Africa or the Middle East are just not interested in freedom -- culturally just not ready for freedom," she said.

--snip--

Rice and other aides have defended themselves in part by pointing to the fact that doubts about the intelligence appeared in a footnote, written by the State Department, buried deep in a top-secret National Intelligence Estimate. That footnote was thus not read by Bush, Rice or other top aides, said a senior White House said last month.

But Rice said Thursday she had read the NIE "cover to cover, a couple of times."

please do not judge so cavalierly. Isaac Peterson is there to receive his well-deserved journalistic award and I guarantee he did not smile politely. He is a gentleman but not a hypocrite.

BTW, does anyone know if this will be on C-Span? Thanks.

6. Is she fucking joking?
I saw this in a Letter to the Editor where someone compared the Anti-Smoking Laws in Delaware to the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's.

The woman is freaking ill and is doing horrible pandering to the African American community. :puke:

9. What a piss poor analogy!
I think Ms Rice has read too much "Little Orphan Nanny" - Of course Condoleezza doesn't have a dog and that's good
for the dog.

11. I just saw a clip from her appearance
And she said something I couldn't find in the print coverage: In the part after the statement about "dog years", she said something like "we had no idea what places we would be now."

No idea? That's got to be an out-and-out lie. Didn't the PNAC petition Clinton years ago to invade Iraq? Wasn't that always part of the plan for at least Cheney, Wolfie and Perle? She could've picked up on this stuff just by standing around the West Wing water cooler.

12. I like this part especially in light of Wolfowitz remarks
"Confronting Saddam Hussein's Iraq was also essential. Let me be very clear about why we went to war against Saddam Hussein. Saddam Hussein's regime posed a threat to the security of the United States and the world. This was a regime that had pursued, had used and possessed weapons of mass destruction. THE REGIME HAD LINKS TO TERROR,"

Did your people not check with Wolfowitz's people before you hit the interviews and lectures today?

"Q: And when did you start to think that perhaps Iraq had something to do with it?
Wolfowitz: I’m not sure even now that I would say Iraq had something to do with it. "

Let the games begin!!!

13. Hey, Condi: It's not the Iraqis who are incapable of democracy.
It's you, your boss, and the rest of the bushista regime who have proven that you would rather suffocate democracy than take your chances with it.

14. No one is saying that the Iraqis are incapable of democracy
We are saying that the Bush junta, which came to power subverting free elections, is incapable of showing them what it is.

We are saying that siezing the mineral rights of a nation for services for which no one contracted -- even "liberation" -- is not justice.

We are saying that colonial occupation is not liberation in the first place.

We are saying that anybody who seriously thinks that your position is in any way analogous to ending Jim Crow in the South is full of baloney.

We are saying that the Iraqi people will be liberated when they throw you and the Frat Boy out; they may (and I hope they do) achieve democracy some time after that, but not before.

15. Oh Darn
I thought that this might be a statement from former hall of fame Red sox outfielder Jim Rice, who might actually have something intelligent to say regarding an issue. I didn't realize that it was just more verbal feces from ol'CONdi. Oh well....

( I think Jim Rice worked as a sprotscaster for a while, didn't he?)
