Bush: Berg's killers must be found

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush is focusing on the killers in Iraq who beheaded American civilian Nicholas Berg, insisting they must be hunted down as part of a strategy ultimately designed to bring peace to the U.S.-occupied country.

"We must confront the enemy and stay on the offensive until these killers are defeated," Bush said in his weekly radio address, as he sought to shift the focus from the abuse of some Iraqi prisoners by American troops.

With polls showing his approval ratings at the lowest level of his presidency, Bush went on the offensive, saying that Marines are systematically dismantling the militia of a radical Shiite cleric and are disrupting enemy attacks in the Fallujah area, home of Saddam Hussein loyalists and other militants.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said later that the United States only stations its forces in places around the world "where we are welcome, and I fully expect our forces to continue to be in Iraq at the invitation of a sovereign government on July 1."

The White House turned down plans to get Ansar al-Islam and Zarqawi three times because they thought it would undermine the case for war against Iraq. Bush has a lot of nerve playing the tough sheriff now.

In the episode, one of the US Envoy vehicles is attacked in Gaza. Two congressmen, and Admiral Percy Fitzwallace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (played by John Amos, and one of my favorite characters), are killed.

President Bartlett visits Mrs. Fitzwallace in her home, to offer his condolences and to promise her that "we will hunt down and bring to justice the people who did this."

"Thank you, Mr. President," she says, calmly, "but you won't catch them or bring them to justice. I know the world."

I couldn't help but think of all the promises made to Americans about "hunting down the killers."

But then again, so many deaths have. Although I do get the feeling that this isn't proving to be as good a distraction as a lot of people thought it would - it seems to be helping with his base, but I don't get the sense it is winning converts to the cause of continuing the war in Iraq.

Which makes you wonder, just what distraction could lie in store.
