U.S. says kills 16 Shi'ite insurgents in Baghdad

10 May 2004 18:19:32 GMT

BAGHDAD, May 10 (Reuters) - U.S. troops killed 16 militiamen loyal to rebel cleric Shi'ite cleric in a series of clashes in Baghdad's Sadr City suburb overnight, the U.S. military said on Monday, a day after it said 19 were killed in the same area.

"Fourteen of the insurgents were members of rocket-propelled grenade launcher teams, one was part of a mortar team engaging a coalition base and the final one was killed when he fired on a coalition patrol," the U.S.-led military said in a statement.

2. Sounds like the "invincible warrior" meme is back
Dozens of "them" killed and none of "us". After the setback in Fallujah and the torture photos, some good news was needed. The question is, are they lying about casualties or did they just find some people to go kill that couldn't effectively fight back.

7. The problem with news like this is

For every one we kill, how many more will be created to replace the dead? Consider: You're a freedom-loving mind-your-own-business Iraqi, then your brother/cousin/friend/neighbor is killed in one of these shootouts. You will just want the invaders gone, and might start to do something to make that happen.

The other problem is, in a country of millions, can 100,00 troops really win, even killing 20 at a time compared to losses of 1 or 2?

3. I will never understand why they keep
calling them "insurgents," "terrorists," and "thugs." We invaded their country. They are trying to take it back from the invaders. I don't want any more of our military killed. Yet we keep egging them on.

5. You mean they didn't turn themselves in?
You'd think with the humane way we treat our prisoners Iraqis would be falling overthemselves to surrender.

9. I'm trying to figure out just when it was that this insipid
term. . ."ingurgents" started to get bandied around. I know it's a result of the "either you with us or against us" mentality but when the rest of the world sees photos of the dead toddlers and elderly. . .and we're barraged with photos of scum porn at the prisons where the Red Cross is now saying that 90% are innocents. . .Where's the outrage???

Iraqis reconstructed the Baghdad headquarters of a rebel Shiite cleric today after U.S. troops killed at least 19 militiamen in clashes near the Sadr City slum district.
