Prison commander apologizes, invites Red Cross to visit
Prison commander apologizes, invites Red Cross to visit

05/06/2004

ABU GHRAIB, Iraq (AP) -- The commander of U.S.-run prisons in Iraq apologized Wednesday for the abuse of prisoners by American guards and said he will invite observers from the Red Cross and Iraqi government into Abu Ghraib prison.
Inmates shouted protests about mistreatment as Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller led journalists through the lockup, the scene of photographs that showed Iraqi prisoners being abused by smiling U.S. guards.

"I would like to apologize for our nation and for our military for the small number of soldiers who committed illegal or unauthorized acts here at Abu Ghraib," Miller said. "These are violations not only of our national policy but of how we conduct ourselves as members of the international community."

Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the spokesman for the U.S. command, also apologized.
"My Army has been embarrassed by this. My Army has been shamed by this," he said. "And on behalf of my Army, I apologize for what those soldiers did to your citizens."

1. now that they have all the "ghost prisoners" spirited away...
and the cia staff safely relocated...
and the smeared blood bleached off the walls...
and the torture equipment safely buried...

now, ya'll come on in!

what a transparent bunch of shit.

3. They should allow the ICRC
into all the jails in Iraq, immediately. Second, they should be allowed in with cameras in order to document the current conditions of the prisoners that are being held at these facilities. Any prisoner claiming to have been beaten, needs to photographed while still in the prison before they are moved or released.

2. Rummy should have done something like this....
as soon as he got a heads up. Why did these guys wait so long? Thank God for the media publishing those pictures and forcing the issue.

4. rummy had the heads-up as soon as he OK'd it...
i am convinced this goes to the top. they just didn't think anyone cared.

they were having their media henchmen float trial balloons about the acceptability of torture over a year ago, if i remember the time frame correctly.

and it was widely known that we were sending prisoners to other countries with a reputation for abuses.

It is far too late to invite these people to come and take a look. All of the evidence is long gone you can bet money on that.

I personally call for the immediate impeachment of the entire lot of these creatures pretending to be elected officials.

Resign or be impeached and imprisoned! That is a message for you Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Powell, Cheney, Rice and the rest of your lowly pack of THUGS!

:grr:
