Bush, Wife to Skip Daughters' Graduations

Bush, Wife to Skip Daughters' Graduations

16 minutes ago Add White House -

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - President Bush (news - web sites) and first lady Laura Bush will skip their twin daughters' college graduations later this month to avoid creating a distraction at the respective schools, the White House said Thursday.

"There are no plans at this time to attend these ceremonies," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for Laura Bush. "The Bushes felt the focus should be on the students, and not how long the lines are to go through the metal detectors."

Jenna Bush is slated to graduate May 22 from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in English. Barbara Bush graduates May 24 with a bachelor's in humanities from Yale University.

5. What unadulterated

Bullshit!
I mean, Nixon attended his daughter's graduation from Smith...didn't he?
Clinton went to Chelsea's graduation...
What kind of a father AND mother ditches their little darling's graduation?
What the fuck are they gonna do send that old lecher Cheney in their place???
You just know he sez all sorts of gruesome sexually suggestive things to the twins when Daddy isn't around...

Ghod it's like the friggin' Hell's Angels won the lottery and instead of money they got power.

30. So much for the "family man" image.
You can't vet the world, Bud!

Does W think this isn't how the rest of his pitiful life will be?

Wherever he goes, a majority of Americans will be there to greet him... and not with flowers and candy. Bush* will have to learn the hard way that free speech will no longer be his to control.

But I recall reading a few years back that the twins were not supportive of Dad's bid for the presidency. They don't appear to have been close at all throughout their teenaged years -- when they appear in public at all, it's generally with Laura.

He cannot be an audience; he must be the act. When has anyone seen him anywhere that he didn't get up and wallow in the spotlight like the sicko narcissist hi is ? At the 9-11 memorial service at Washington Cathedral he had to climb into the pulpit himself. At the Olympics, he had to go sit among the people who earned their way to the Olympics.

The asshole is a pathological narcissist. Remember that. Take it to the bank.

38. It is not unusual for people of a certain class to treat their
children as pets. They don't ever develop a close relationship with them because the staff raises them. It wouldn't surprise me a wit if that is the case here.

The folks I've known raised like that were miserable when they were young, always trying to compensate. They grow up just like their parents with a deep sense of entitlement, little empathy and poor relationships.

99. I remember the Clinton's at several big Stanford events
including freshman orientation (while he was president) - the pics were great. I believe I saw pics (was no longer in the area) of both Clinton's in attendance at Chelsea's graduation. So, the Clinton's shouldn't have gone to see their only daughter graduate because it might have been disruptive? Sorry, we simply disagree on this one. There are times that even famous folks are simply parents wanting to share momentous occaisions with their children. Unless, of course, they were already long standing absentee parents, which seems to be the case with W (not nec. Laura - am surprised that she isn't going... maybe not doing so to avoid making hubby look bad in comparison?)

116. But Bush has given graduation speeches at other universities
the past few years hasn't he?

He gave the graduation speech at West Point last year.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/06/2002060...

And at Yale in 2001.
www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=15797

So he didn't really give a shit about the students have to pass through metal detectors before. He's inconvenienced people at sports events all over the country for the past three years.

This is about Bush having better things to do than go to events where he isn't the featured speaker.

56. * has a contingency plan in place...
Bush and his minions have been bracing for the backlash from Americans for a very long time and have no intention of relinquishing power anytime soon.

If you remember just last week, * on the campaign trail heavily promoting the renewal Of PA1 and approval of PA2.. If you think living with PA1 was bad enough, the tenets in PA2 guarantee Bush himself can designate by virtue of sole decree, your status as an enemy combatant for doing nothing more than peacefully protesting at an anti-Bush political rally.

Included in this broadened power is having you trucked off to N.C. stripped of your right to counsel, incarcerated until you are processed and sent to a designated combatant holding camp, perhaps never to be heard from again.

As bad as these pictures are of the tortured civilians and prisoners and the revulsion we feel at the degradation on both sides of humanity. These pictures are but a window into what may be in store for all of us.

We should think long and hard, using what we have learned about this administration's definition of American; as the impetus of shedding light onto the "dark" side of the Bush Administration, and the Republican Party that supports this unholy fascism.

What may have been uncovered here is more than meets the eye. These photos may serve as an introduction to the cruel and unusual punishment they intend be visited on anyone not of their ideology, including us.

If either Bush came the campus would be inundated with security, protests, "free speech zones", metal detectors, slack-jawed gawkers and (in Texas) Bush loving sychophants. If he attends then it becomes all about him, and in two cities like New Haven and Austin he could expect a lot of protestors. The daughters probably don't want them there, as it would politicize the commencement for many of the graduates (and remind many of them that they do not have jobs).

I would be angry if someone spoiled my graduation, or my kids' graduation because of politics. The whole event would turn into a circus.

His handlers probably know that his presence would turn the whole thing into negative publicity for him. That is probably the real, and selfish reason for his non-attendance.

I have attended all my kids' graduations. We are skipping my oldest daughter's graduate school commencement. She told us she preferred to have us there for her senior recital. We went to that, and spent quite a bit of time with her.

Maybe we need to pick our battles. Shrub does enough heinous stuff that we can criticize legitimately. Let's forget about this one.

The extra-heavy security would screw up the ceremonies. Possible protests would surely make him look bad. Besides, I'm not sure the girls really want him there.

But why couldn't poor Laura go? She's not that controversial. If she isn't safe because she's the president's wife, what about the safety of the president's daughters? Their names will be called & they'll walk across a stage to get their diplomas--in plain view of a large crowd of people.

Edited on Thu May-06-04 04:49 PM by Divernan
Yale has two days of graduation ceremnies,or at least it did back in 1986, when my son graduated (summa cum laude/distinction in the major). The first day was an outdoor, university wide ceremony with the commencement speaker and all graduates for both bachelors and advanced degrees. My son and others wore strips of red cloth tied around their arms to protest apartheid, and Yale's refusal to divest its holdings in South Africa. ( All the students and families were in great spirits, whether wearing a protest symbol or not.) The second day of graduation featured very small ceremonies and receptions held at each of the residential colleges. My son's was Pierson College, and there were only the 100 graduating seniors and their families, gathered in the tree-shaded interior courtyard of the college. This is where the master of the college called each graduate up by name, to the raucous yells and cheers of their classmates. The master said a little about their undergraduate activities and where they were headed after graduation, and then handed them their diploma. Among the Pierson grads was Prescott Bush the IVth, and both his parents were there for the occasion. It would be very easy to have W and Laura at this second day's ceremony and provide security in such a totally enclosed space. The whole weekend was one great party. It takes long years of hard work to raise a child, and watching her or him graduate from college is a terrific joy and highlight of parenthood. I feel very sorry for anyone whose parents don't come to watch them graduate.

Like the one at his alma mater, where he went on and on about how dumb and lazy he'd been! Or this one at the University of South Carolina. Evidently he didn't worry about "creating a distraction" for other people and their kids. He'll put on that blue Yale doctoral gown and prance around all day! (Or maybe he's lost interest in going to these functions now that he's got that honorary degree?)

Well, if Bush isn't going to congratulate his own daughters, I will. (Their work can't be that much worse than the tons of papers I'm grading right now.)

p.s. if his only reason is that he's afraid of being booed in front of the girls ... I think he should suck it up and just go! Jenna and Barbara are old enough to be able to handle that. They've had to put up with a lot more public disapproval than his handlers have let him face, I bet. And if he doesn't know how to defuse tension by doing an affable I'm-only-Jenna's-dad act, what kind of "war president" is he? If he thinks things have gotten so much worse than even last year, whose fault is that?

Seriously though, most people only get to claim their undergraduate diploma once. I'm not surprised that Great Leader would miss his kids' graduation, but I don't believe education is of any real importance to Bush.

Laura's probably the one who did the school stuff with them when they were growing up, because I don't think he's got the patience.

You know, I've never heard Bush bragging about how well his daughters do in school, which subjects they like, etc. -- it seems that all he hopes for is for Jenna to get married in front of the waterfall at the ranch (even though it means she'll have to wear hip waders and a rain slicker). And he's called them "whiners" in public, too!

Personally I hope they have happy lives -- they didn't even want him to run for office.

107. Bush used daughters as a political shield. Possibility causing suicide.
Such short memories the American Shadow Government Press has!

When Bush's drunk driving came up just before the election he used his daughters as an excuse. Is this what a Christian man does to his children? I thought a Christian man was supposed to protect his family, especially his children, no matter the costs? But then, we're talking about Christian Fundimentalists!

I can't imagine a man so sleazy to use his baby twin girls as an exuse. Such shame. Such IMMORALITY!

Bush didn't care if his daughters committed suicide from guilt? If Bush had lost (legally) the election his daughters could have had so much guilt it drove them to suicide. 'For they are the cause of him losing the Presidency.' Maybe not in a few days or weeks but even years later. I'm sure a 1000 psychiatrists could depose that this extreem guilt could cause suicide.

------------------

Was that in Bush's mind? Maybe.

Could that have caused suicide? Sure.

Was that a risk Bush was willing to take with his children? Of course!

------------------

For those of you with short memories, the drunken driving scandal was so serious I watched Karen Hughes more than 50 times in 2 days of every Shadow Gov. Media Outlet pleading with voters not to let this incident prevent Bush from being elected.
(We can see what kind of Christian moral values this woman has too!)

Isn't this this first time in history a future President used his children as a shield? What a dirty aWol Texas Air Gurad COWARD!

Are you surprised he doesn't go the graduation to escaped political embarassment?
