NEW HAVEN, Conn. - President Bush (news - web sites) and first lady Laura Bush will skip their twin daughters' college graduations later this month to avoid creating a distraction at the respective schools, the White House said Thursday.



"There are no plans at this time to attend these ceremonies," said Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for Laura Bush. "The Bushes felt the focus should be on the students, and not how long the lines are to go through the metal detectors."


Jenna Bush is slated to graduate May 22 from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in English. Barbara Bush graduates May 24 with a bachelor's in humanities from Yale University.

Yale has two days of graduation ceremnies,or at least it did back in 1986, when my son graduated (summa cum laude/distinction in the major). The first day was an outdoor, university wide ceremony with the commencement speaker and all graduates for both bachelors and advanced degrees. My son and others wore strips of red cloth tied around their arms to protest apartheid, and Yale's refusal to divest its holdings in South Africa. ( All the students and families were in great spirits, whether wearing a protest symbol or not.) The second day of graduation featured very small ceremonies and receptions held at each of the residential colleges. My son's was Pierson College, and there were only the 100 graduating seniors and their families, gathered in the tree-shaded interior courtyard of the college. This is where the master of the college called each graduate up by name, to the raucous yells and cheers of their classmates. The master said a little about their undergraduate activities and where they were headed after graduation, and then handed them their diploma. Among the Pierson grads was Prescott Bush the IVth, and both his parents were there for the occasion. It would be very easy to have W and Laura at this second day's ceremony and provide security in such a totally enclosed space. The whole weekend was one great party. It takes long years of hard work to raise a child, and watching her or him graduate from college is a terrific joy and highlight of parenthood. I feel very sorry for anyone whose parents don't come to watch them graduate.

You know, I've never heard Bush bragging about how well his daughters do in school, which subjects they like, etc. -- it seems that all he hopes for is for Jenna to get married in front of the waterfall at the ranch (even though it means she'll have to wear hip waders and a rain slicker). And he's called them "whiners" in public, too!

Personally I hope they have happy lives -- they didn't even want him to run for office.

When Bush's drunk driving came up just before the election he used his daughters as an excuse. Is this what a Christian man does to his children? I thought a Christian man was supposed to protect his family, especially his children, no matter the costs? But then, we're talking about Christian Fundimentalists!

I can't imagine a man so sleazy to use his baby twin girls as an exuse. Such shame. Such IMMORALITY!

Bush didn't care if his daughters committed suicide from guilt? If Bush had lost (legally) the election his daughters could have had so much guilt it drove them to suicide. 'For they are the cause of him losing the Presidency.' Maybe not in a few days or weeks but even years later. I'm sure a 1000 psychiatrists could depose that this extreem guilt could cause suicide.
