We're spending at the rate of about $1 billion a week, so $25 billion is about six months' worth.

What major event is coming up in six months?

42. Bush had no choice but to ask before the election
The Republicans in Congress threatened to pass a bill over his objections which would have required him to ask for additional money in its own spending bill before the election.

That would have been a disaster for Bush.

21. they need 50 but they'll take the 25
Last February, President Bush (news - web sites)'s budget omitted any funds for U.S. military and reconstruction activities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bolten said at the time that the administration's 2005 request for Iraq could be up to $50 billion.

It seemed likely that the $25 billion proposal to be discussed on Wednesday would be only the first portion of funds that will be needed for next year.

By ALAN FRAM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration will ask Congress for an additional $25 billion for U.S. operations in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites), a House Republican aide said Wednesday, a change from the White House's earlier plans to not request such money until after the November elections.

America, wake up! The troops are being held hostage by corporate criminals who don't even recognize the United States of America, let show any loyality to it.

The troops are held hostage while private contractors and sadists in prisons are making their days more dangerous. They are being held hostage: pay up or we shut off the supplies and the righteously pissed Iraqi population might slaughter them when ammo runs short.

Cheney is the bag man for this ransom scheme.

47. Mussolini does seem more and more relevant.
When the Italian people figured out what Mussolini had done to their country, they grabbed him and enacted mob justice.

I don't advocate any kind of mob justice. I do advocate the peaceful enforcement of constitutional and international law.

Our president and his staff are guilty of war crimes, and they should be held accountable, in both American courts and international courts.

an itemized accounting of previous monies spent on:

....Indy defense Contractors

....Logistics

....Military Personal's safety equipment

....New and IMPROVED Heavy armaments containing
steel reinforced floors and sides.

Kerry is an old player at this game.

I think he's already proven himself the best choice we have against Bush.

I liked Dean. But with all the new developments, Dean

would have been out of his depth at this point in time.

I don't even know what those fools stand for anymore. If it's big republican government, they should just say so. Bush could throw all of his base into an Iraqi prison in a big naked pile, and they would come running back to meekly ask their master for some more.

Or, the other theory is that Bush has taken on an aura of the divine to them. To the GOP sheep, voicing disagreement with Bush is akin to blaspheming God herself.

What is exhausting about the whole mess is that the GOP is so efficient at the talking point. I don't want to raise Hillary's vast right wing conspiracy accusation again, but this latest round of ads and tv appearances by the GOP (with the Kerry as 'troubling' theme) does seem to be extremely coordinated amongst the Bush campaign, the GOP, the right wing talk show hosts, and the chorus of GOP apologists. Goebbels understood the effectiveness of the big lie. The Bush administration and the GOP are perfecting the use of it.

And Bush's supporters go along with it. Never once considering what kind of world they are leaving to their children. They simply don't care. Other than a shrill hatred for people and things different from themselves, what else drives the GOP base?

Now, I heard we're adding 45,000 troops to Iraq, but we're bringing 25,000 back, so........$25 Billion divided by 20,000 troops? That's $1,250,000 per person!

You see, if he doesn't get approval (which will probably be the case, no?), then when we have to withdraw from Iraq, BushCo can blame the resulting chaos in Iraq from the fact that "Kerry and the Senate" didn't allow him to "go the distance" in Iraq. Then it also removes the stumbling block of our troops in Iraq. Hmmm... just rambling here.

They can say, 'gee, we want to improve the situation over there and the responsible thing to do is spend all our money on Iraq. If you don't approve it then you are depriving the troops of what they need.'

With everyone gawking in horror at the torture factory, spending all our money is hardly noticable in comparison. Better get the pundit flaming out of the way before the convention in September.

59. here's Hastert's press release...haven't seen one from the Dems yet
WASHINGTON, May 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Speaker J. Dennis Hastert released the following statement regarding the President's request for additional funding for the War on Terror:

"I spoke to the President earlier today regarding fiscal year 2005 funding for our troops as they fight the war on terror. I told him that I will do everything I can to support our troops and his request for additional '05 funding."

"After the September 11th attacks, the President said that the war on terror would long, difficult, and at times messy. He was right, and we are now involved in a world-wide conflict, from Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites), to other parts of the globe."

"We have no choice but to support our President and our troops at this critical time."

"This request comes as no surprise to me or to many of my colleagues. Budget Chairman Jim Nussle included $50 billion dollars in a reserve fund for next year's budget in anticipation of such a request, and Armed Services Chairman Duncan Hunter has already begun marking up an authorization bill that tracks closely with the President's request."

"I believe the Congress will strongly support the President's request and support our troops as they fight this vitally important war against terrorists."

60. This will bite bushie in the but
He promised everyone that the Iraqi oil would pay for this fiasco. Now, $87billion later he wants another $25billion. This on top of heavy casualties and the whole mess with the torture photos. Not too mention that one person after another is starting to speak up about all the lies this administration has told. People are going to say enough is enough.

Maybe?

Comes to $583 billion in one year.

Interesting fact: The total receipts of individual Federal income taxes for FY 2003 was $789 billion.

63. this is completely being done because it's ammo against Kerry
Edited on Wed May-05-04 05:22 PM by TheWebHead
they would have waited post-election otherwise. If he votes for it, they'll say he's a flip-flopper. If he votes against, they'll say he's against supporting our troops.

65. Bush was planning to ask AFTER the election...
.. he KNEW we needed the money for his quagmire.. but he planned to wait until after November. Well.. turns out he would be leaving the troops unpaid, etc., to further himself poltically. I guess he got overruled, and has to ask for the money. I guess he hopes that Kerry will vote against it, so he can villify him once again.

I want my money back..

67. DISTRACTION Technique...torture story provides cover for $25B request
Call me synical, but I don't think it's any coincidence that the $25B request comes out right in the middle of a very distracting torture story.

Look, look, little lemmings at the shiney and salacious object over there...

75. BBC article
Thank goodness I found this thread and didn't dupe! :-)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3688449.stm

US President George Bush has asked for an extra $25bn for military costs in Iraq and Afghanistan, reversing a previous spending pledge.

In a statement, the White House cited "recent developments on the ground and increased demands on our troops" as the reasons for the request.

78. Adding another VERY IMPORTANT paragraph
from the article you are citing:

He says Wednesday's statement - which hints that the White House will be asking for more money later - is an about-face likely to provoke a further row.

(for those that don't click on the link - everybody needs to know this part, imho)
