Senator: Intel Panel Report Unflattering
The Associated Press
Tuesday, May 4, 2004; 8:12 AM

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Senate Intelligence Committee's upcoming report on prewar assessments of Iraq "does not paint a flattering picture" of the nation's intelligence community, Republican Sen. Pat Roberts said Monday.

But Roberts, the committee's chairman, said the intelligence failure wasn't limited to the United States. Many nations - including France and Germany, which criticized the U.S. decision to act in Iraq without United Nations approval - believed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

"Almost everyone believed, regardless of how you felt about whether you should have unilateral military action or wait for the U.N., there was no disagreement about the belief that weapons of mass destruction existed," Roberts, R-Kan., said during a lecture at Kansas State University.

He added later, "The problem is, the information was wrong."
