Ron Paul targets youngest voters with campus-focused drive
Source: Wash. Post

A surprising fact of the GOP primary: The oldest presidential contender is a magnet for some of the youngest voters.

Rep. Ron Paul, the 76-year-old Texas doctor and 12-term congressman, is embarked on his third try for the White House, and his national youth-vote coordinator said that a decade of unorthdox statements along with recent years of fiscal hardship and foreign wars have combined to inspire young minds. Hes got unconventional answers and real solutions to the problems that were facing, explained Edward King, just before his walk-through for a large Iowa State University rally scheduled for Thursday night.

In the weeks before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, Pauls support has climbed steadily as other front-runners have spiked.

Temporary energy is the term one campaign adviser chose for the spiky prospects of rivals, such as Rep. Michele Bachmann, Gov. Rick Perry and the latest front-runner, former House speaker Newt Gingrich. By contrast, Pauls trajectory appears slow and steady, and his focus is on college campuses because thats where theres so many open-minded people who are open to new ideas that are outside of the mainstream establishment that they hear from other politicians, said King.

2. I'm not surprised. Obama pretty much fucked over the youth vote.

3. I've always been fascinated by Paul
Some of the things he says I, surprisingly, agree with 100%. A whole lot of the rest of it though, makes me wonder what planet he came from.

I think he's actually one of those rare creatures - a true conservative, in more than just name. Not someone I despise, just someone I disagree with a great deal and think is fairly ignorant in regards to most subjects. I suspect he can get quite a surge from the youth vote. People are looking for someone unique, individual, with interesting ideas on how to save our economy. At 18, I might have voted for him myself.
