DoD Announces Soldier's Captured Status
The Department of Defense announced today a change in the status of a soldier serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom from duty status - whereabouts unknown to captured.

Pfc. Keith M. Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, was declared captured on April 16.

Lunaville has the headline as this:
1 Soldier is listed as Captured, 1 Soldier is listed as DUSTWIN

I don't understand the staus of "captured". It's scary that he's not listed as POW because that indicates to me that the Geneva Conventions aren't going to come into play. Is he not a POW because it's not a real war or because those holding him aren't military? Or do we know?

Semantics can be so important, no?

1. Oh no....
you see, while we are "at war" per the administration...we're not
really "at war" when it comes to Iraq. Remember, the Iraqis are
"insurgents" and "illegal combatants" mixed in with some "terrorists".
:eyes:
Therefore, the poor soldier that has been "caught" is not really
a POW...he's a "captured hostage".

Just remember that the US bestows the same title to the Iraqis: they
are considered "detained" and/or captured but NEVER as POWs... I
think if they were "POWs" then the Red Cross/Crescent would have
access rights to them, etc. and the bushistas can't have that.

Its pure Orwellian doublespeak.

5. Also they were "terrorist attacks" then "insurgent activity" then "rebels"
FOX et all loved saying that the attacks on our troops were being carried out by "terrorists" BOO! TERRORISTS! but when we started NEGOTIATING with alSadr they were rebels, see we don't negotiate with "terrorists" except when we do.

6. two things
Is he really a "hostage" if no demands are made in exchange for his release?

Are the insurgents really "terrorists" if the typical nature of their assault targets foreign military components in Iraq?

3. I'll bet that more than anything else it simply reflects...
...this administration's desperation to low-ball the reality of it's Middle Eastern morass-- "detainee" sounds so much more pleasant than "prisoner of war." What was the euphemism for "body bag?" "Transport tube" or something similar?
